    Hi Everyone.
One of my associates has had enough of coins so he says. He has been bitten several times while trying to turn profits with modern MS-70 coins and poor buying choices IMO. But anyways my question is this. While trying to offload alot of his coins he has offered me the following sets.
2000,02,03,04,05,06,07,08,09 silver statehood quarter sets in mint packages with the COA included. He is asking $180.00 for the lot. I have looked around but the prices on these sets are all over the place right now.
He also has several MS-70 ASE,S and Presidential coins that he wants half price for, but I dont do very much shopping in the MS-70 ballpark and I'm very skeptical of buying any of the 2007- present presidential coins graded. Thanks in advance and any thoughts or advice or price quotes are welcome.

The presidentials are worth about $3-$5. ASEs are ASEs in any grade, 1 oz silver coin. As far as the mint sets go, eh! Considering the issue price from the Mint, that's not too bad. Make him an offer on those.

Thanks 47 for the advice. I kindda want the silver sets, just was having a hard time deciding what they are worth. Lol he would stroke out if I offered him 5 bucks for his presidential coins, he got took to the woodshed on those.

Remember, buy the coin not the slab.

When it comes to "moderns", it is not solely a case of "buy the coin, not the slab". People like your friend are being taken to the cleaners on a daily basis because they are falling for the "investment spiel" without knowing anything at all about coins, and the premiums they are paying for MS70, PF70, First Strikes, Early Releases, etc. will never be recovered.

Stay away from the Prez bucks, unless it's for a simple Dansco. Just WAAAY too many minted. Throw out price guides....they're about 4X too high. I know this for a fact. Even top pops see very little interest. IMHO, moderns are for spending or filling an album. There are a VERY few exceptions to this.

Yea thats what I think about the moderns also. Hopefully I can get the silver annual sets from him and maybe a ASE or two but you guys seem to be thinkin what im thinking on the rest of his coins. Just hate to see anyone with a bad taste for the hobby.

I have a few comments about the silver statehood quarters:

    1) I assume they are proof quarters since that is the only way to get the silver quarters. Are all of them in red & white packaging from the U.S. Mint?

    2) Separate Silver Proof Sets for the States Quarters were not produced from 1999-2003. If the ones your friend has (2000, 2002 & 2003) are in blue & white packaging, they are clad quarters, not silver. The only way you could get the silver proof quarters for those years would be to buy the complete sets which included the half dollar, dime, nickel and cent (1999) and all those plus the golden dollar for the years 2000-2003.

    3) If it is your intent to try to complete the set of silver proof states quarters, you should be aware that the 1999 set will cost in the neighborhood of $300 because no one in their right mind is going to break up the 9-coin set just to sell you the quarters.

One more thing, you would be wasting your money buying the MS70 SAE's unless he is going to give you a very substantial discount. Since he was sucked into that deal in the first place, I doubt that your friend would be very happy selling them for such a loss. Just out of curiosity, can you even tell the difference between an MS70 and an MS69? If you can't, it is just one more reason why you shouldn't buy them.

Which is why I stay away from first strikes, early releases, MS/PR 70. You can get raw MS coins for far less. Simply because it's in a slab, with a fancy label on it doesn't make it more valuable than if it was in a 2x2. It's still the same coin.

Yes cpm I am aware of the issue types for the 1999-2003 sets and will have to wait and see what he shows up with to see if they are clad sets or the year mint sets of silver. I also agree about the MS-70 ASE,S as I only buy them raw as silver so I dont see getting those unless they are real cheap. Thanks for the advice from you guys.

I'd offer him $165 for the proof sets and pass on the ASEs no matter what. If he says no to the offer, walk away and be happy that you did. :)

Those TV hucksters like coin vault and Mike Miezac really pushed the Ms-70 moderns and
first strike ASE's hard, always intimating but never really saying that they were a great investment and destined to skyrocket in value.
I wonder if your friend got sucked in by those snake oil selling cheeseballs.

I'm guessing you wouldn't really try to haggle with a friend over $15, right?

I'd buy the proof sets, especially if the 00 and 02 are the full sets and all are silver.

I'd stay as far away from the MS70 eagles as possible, mostly to maintain my friendship. I'd tell them the truth if pressed, but only if pressed.

The presidential dollars, I think I'd rather tell the truth about the MS70 eagles than talk about those at all.

Well my friend finally came to see me with his coins and here are a few pics of what I bought from him. He knew what I would say about the MS70 SE coins but was happy that I was honest with him. I plan to help him put those on Ebay and atleast get some of his investment out of them.

I purchased this lot of Silver sets from him for $100.00.
This is a bad pic but this was a sweet silver IKE he let me have for $10.00.
This was a nice raw quarter eagle i picked up for $100.00 (crappy pic srry )
And last but not least I bought this 2008 P Eagle from him for $50.00. I will post some of the MS70 SE on our site when and if he gets with me on a price that he will sell them for and that I think is fair to post. Well for $260.00 I think I came out very good and altough my friend wasnt the happiest camper he remains my friend and understood me when I tried to explain the collecting versus investing story and he has sworn off buying anymore ms70 modern coins as investments. I thank you all for your advice and any feedback on the coins I purchased THANKS.

You can still find all of the coins in OGP for less money.

    Original Government Packaging.

You did good on that bald eagle. I know nothing about the gold coins. The silver statehoods, not too bad. I think I saw a set of those for a little less, but not much.

I don't mind buying slabbed 70's as long as they're priced close to 69's - although most of the 70's premiums are crazy. Although I've cherry picked, what I believe to be 70's from a number of raw coins, who knows what they'll actually certify as someday. So again, if the price is right, why not buy them slabbed?
