I do love flipping the pages of my coin albums. But i just haven't found the right one. I have Dansco, Intercept, Littleton and a real inexpensive one called "The Coin Collector" from Wizard. I find that each one of every series I've gotten so far, are missing a great many issues. Not just varieties, but actual issues. The Dansco Jefferson Nickels with Proofs (8113) for example, doesn't have holes for all the proofs! They have a spot for the 1968-s, but not for the 1968-s proof. why? I find they all seem to be missing spots for the SMS issues as well as the 94 & 97 SP. I know I could get blank issues and hand write the dates etc., but that doesn't look nearly as nice as the pre-printed ones. Are there albums I'm not aware of? What do all you coin nuts.... Er..... Numismatists, do for album organization?
I make my own albums, using 1/2" 3-ring binders, 20-pocket 2x2 pages, and printed backing sheets with all the information about the coins. At the moment I have more than 40 volumes containing my (no longer maintained or updated) US coins, my Japanese type and date sets, my One From Every collection, and several specialized collections. They fit very nicely in a gun safe.
i personally use 2x2 flips for coins an 20-pocket 2x2 pages, and printed backing sheets with all the information about the coins or pint on the 2x2
Used the blank albums and get a labeling machine such as a Brother P-touch. They can make nice printed labels on a clear tape that will pretty much disappear when placed on the page so it looks like the page was pre-printed. Then you can custome design the album to your hearts content. Just make sure that you put the labels on straight.
This is what I do as well. Blank 2x2 and a 3 ring binder. As I get more of a certain kind I can move them to a new book and I am not limited by preprinted books.
I am using the blank plastic cheapies, I am not familiar with the Dansco albums, are they a lot better?
What I like about Dansco, is that they seem to have the most versatility as far as custom pages. You can get an empty binder and fill it with what ever pages you want. sCheck them out: http://www.wizardcoinsupply.com/home.php?cat=10
The P-Touch is a nice machine. I've been using one for 6-7 years for address labels and submission labels for the flips. It can store an untold number of addresses in its memory. Chris
After looking into it I would like to get the 7070 type set book. Apparently this is not made anymore and out of stock? Is ebay about the only place to get one? Looks like about $50 for the book on there.
I also had a heck of a time finding one, so I just went with the Intercept Shield US type set album. I'm happy with it.
I still use Dansco Albums for my raw coins, but I have shifted my collection efforts to high grade slabbed coins. I use leather bound three ring binders with nine (9) pocket heavy duty baseball card sheets. My PCGS and NGC slabbed coins fit nicely, and I have four (4) to five (5) sheets, or thirty-six (36) to fourty-five (45) coins, per book.
I think that all modern albums are just junk and provide little to no protection for your coins. So I have been working on a new style of album that will be custom to the collector and to the series and will offer great protection. I hope to debut them at the upcoming New Orleans ANA show.
