http://mintnewsblog.blogspot.com/2009/08/andrew-jacksons-liberty-first-spouse.html This is the cool one, this one: sub-5K mintage on unc and just look at that coin, one of the better designs of the decade.
Well "sold out" isn't too accurate in my opinion... they didn't sell anywhere near the authorized mintage of 20,000 proofs and 20,000 uncirculateds... it's been for sale for approximately one year and the legislation says that that is the limit they can have them available if they do not sell out. So, calling it "sold out" is just hype and it would be more accurate to simply say no longer available. Still a really cool coin, glad I got my four just about one year ago:
one year on sept 3. They removed it from sale early, often when coins are removed from sale early it can pop prices up. Also the one year thing is not in the law (if I am wrong I'd like to see that).
True, it's been removed earlier than a full year, but I remember them saying they would be on sale for "approximately" one year... but yeah, I can see this surprising some since the others were made no longer for sale at the same time one of the new spouse coins were released. But w/ 5 spouse coins released this year, that can't be the case this year since there were only 4 coins in 2008. I think you might be right about it not being in the actual $1 Prez coin act (which started the First Spouse coins too), I don't even think the 40,000 limit is in there either... just the policy decided by the Mint. I hope the prices on these increase after they have been no longer for sale, the Liberty designs especially are really cool, but in any event the coins were surely not a sell out.
I get excited each time one of these is no longer being sold by the mint. This is going to be one heck of a monster set for anyone who completes this collection. Not too many modern US coins that have mintages under 10,000 let alone 5,000. Someday in the future, someone will want a complete set and these will sell for big bucks.
I'm going to have to save this quote and re-read this in 20 years and see if this still applies. In the meantime, you can send me all your "junk gold".
