    Howdy all,

Do any of you know of good websites that I can look at to learn about ancient coinage? My thirst for knowledge of this area of numismatics is growing :bookworm:... and I don't have $$$ for books (sigh life of a YN).
    C'mon gimme the goods! :D

    Thanks,
    Aidan

There are hundreds of free downloads at Numiswiki, books on ancient coins in the public domain...

One thing I would say is almost all of these books now in public domain are seriously out of date. How about joining the ANA as a YN and borrowing books from there? Or, interlibrary loan can let you borrow most books from your local library.

I'm not too happy that so many of the ancients sites are so centered on attribution and so few actually intend to help "learn about ancient coinage". I'll add Warren's site
    http://esty.ancients.info/
which has some good articles. Of course, I would welcome your visiting my site listed last by Race. There is no really good book for beginners and the information online requires the kind of search skills that we are expecting from young people these days so there is more hope for a YN than some of us might realize.

Doug's pages were my introduction to the world of ancients, and I recommend them highly. You can download all the books you want at Numiswiki, but there's a lot to wade through. As far as material in the public domain being outdated, yes, that's true to a point. But ancient coins weren't minted yesterday, and they've been studied throughout history. Recently scholarship has added a tremendous amount of knowledge, but the older books still hold considerable value, and they're free!
