Another new find directed at a similar Steve coin is my AE30 from Sinope that shares the type with coins of Amisos. I have an Amisos that I wanted to upgrade but, instead, found a Sinope with a lot going for it. In particular it has a large enough flan to show the whole reverse scene reasonably well even though the style is a bit crude. Medusa's body shows weakly on the ground but the gushing blood and severed head are present. Jason's face is weak but is at least on flan. The Athena head obverse is better. Still I believe the Amisos versions are often nicer style but tend to have more crowded flans. For comparison, I'll tack on my old Amisos below the new Sinope. Sinope AE30 85-65 BC
Wow => great new coin!! (totally jealous!!) Eccchhh yah, I got outbid on one of these coins, but sadly it is one of those coins that I can't shake outta my nightmares!! (sometimes it is actually worth over-spending and getting a really cool coin!!) ... but that's another thread!! => awesome, awesome, awesome!! => wow, great new coin Doug (Bravo!!)
Regardless of your totally wonderful new purchase (and once again, Doug => your new coin is awesome!!) => ummm, but here are a few of my "Amisos" examples ...
Yah, I am totally jealous ... I've actually only had that one attempt at obtaining your new coin, but sadly, I was outbid ... => obviously, your new coin is more rare ("rarer"?) than my awesome Amisos examples ... => congrats!! (I definitely wanna find one of these babies!!)
That's quite a collection of decapitated gorgons, Steve! I noticed you said "a few".... you actually have more of them??? Great coins, I especially like the 2nd example, but dare I ask what made you want to buy that many? Z.
Ummmm? ... *awkward* ... => yah, I love this coin-type!! ... oh, and Doug kinda insinuated that these coins were a fairly good investment (and I usually listen to good ol' Doug)
Never listen to Doug on matters of money. I do believe that is is rightly one of the better Greek bronze coins. It is big, carries a good and well known mythological story, and often has good workmanship at least on the obverse. They are not so common that Steve will have trouble finding homes for his nicer ones. They are not so rare that you should pay EF prices for VG coins.
Sadly, in the longer-run => Doug told me that he only meant coins with "full everything" => Perseus' Head, weapon and Medusa carnage!! (that is apparently a bit more difficult to obtain?) =>oh, but I'm on it!!
First time I'm seeing this coin since I don't collect Greek coins, but what a great type it is. I especially like the way the reverse of Doug's Sinope coin seems all splattered with gorgon blood.
