Well, after over three weeks on that stupid wagon, I decided to take the plunge!! I absolutely love this new baby!! Firstly, I think it has pretty hot eye-appeal ... I love the countermark (which isn't in too bad of a spot on the coin, so most of the cool coin-features are still present) => plus, it's a big baby (30 mm and 14.25 grams) => plus, I'm lovin' the eagle!! ... I also think the artist was quite talented (nice precise work on the obverse and reverse) ...... ..... and last, but not least => I now have my first pomegranite!! PAMPHYLIA, Side. Gallienus, Æ 11 Assarion 253-268 AD Diameter: 30 mm Weight: 14.25 grams Obverse: Laureate and draped bust right above eagle standing right, with wings spread, holding wreath in beak; IA obliterated by c/m of Є within circular incuse Reverse: CIΔHTΩN NEΩKOΡΩN, Athena standing facing, head right, holding spear and [thunderbolt], with shield at side; pomegranate to left Reference: SNG France –; BMC 104; for c/m: Howgego 805 Other: 6h … VF, brown surfaces => oh, and as always with my threads: "PLEASE" post any Gallienus coins ... or any Assarion coins ... or any coins with anything relevant to my new sweetie!! Cheers gang!!
Wow Steve another beautie, my three favorite things, Gallienus, Eagle, Athena.the only thing i wonder, where did Gallienus get the ancient hair jell to make his head so spikey.. ...just jokes my Friend, great coin...
Salonina 10 assarion of Side. AE 30 19.3g. What evidence do you have that there was IA under the c/m? Do you have a picture of the same coin before the c/m? c.200 BC provides another coin of Side, a silver tetradrachm that qualifies here with a countermark on the obverse and a pomegranate on the reverse. BTW, I agree 11 assaria is the most common answer here but I wonder why none I find weigh as much as my 10 assaria coin.
*rats* => no Doug, I tried but I couldn't find a virgin 11 assarion example ... ... I searched and searched some more, but sadly I could not find an example that didn't have the cool Є countermark (hmmm, now I really want to find an example without the countermark) ... anyway ... Oh, I really like your Salonina 10 Assarion ... and your pomegranate is also very smooth!! (congrats) => thanks for posting your amazing wares
However => I did notice that this example absolutely blew the other examples outta the water!! => Oh, "PLEASE" try to find a nicer example ... man, I love seeing great coins!!
Here is my other "Assarion" offering ... this lil' number is merely an "8" Assarion (well, unless Doug challenges me and says that his "7" is bigger than my eight!!) Hey gang, if ya got 'em => please post your assarions (thanks) ... SYRIA, Seleucis and Pieria, Philip I Æ 8 Assaria AD 244-249 Antioch mint Diameter: 30 mm Weight: 16.39 grams Obverse: Radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Philip I right Reverse: Turreted, veiled, and draped bust of Tyche right; above, ram leaping right, head left; Δ-Є and S-C across field Reference: McAlee 990 Other: 6h … earthen green patina, areas of light roughness
Saw this Gallienus and thought it was a really interesting coin, with the counter mark, pomegranate and eagle below the bust. Cool pick up! Don't you love it when you have all these great coins to cushion your fall off the wagon?
Each of these Gordian III coins of Tomis are marked in assaria. 4 1/2, 4 1/2, 4 1/2 ligate form, 1 1/2 retrograde (Philip II). The half < appears again when Licinius did his XII< coins but that was in denarii communes (as I recall).
2 assaria (retrograde) of Commodus from Dionysopolis Diadumenian 3 assaria of Marcianopolis Gordian III 5 assaria of Marcianopolis No, that is not Tranquillina. When single, Gordian used Serapis.
I've not seen a 6, 7 or 9. I can't recall a marked one (A) without the half but there are many ones that are not marked.
The seller called this one from Anchialus a pentassarion. If the denomination is not marked, how does one tell? It's 26mm and 13g.
is it the letter on the reverse? this is a pentassaria, has an E...., 3= gamma, B = 2...so that makes sense even if I'm wrong! man steve, that coin is awesome. great details, big, and a neat little mint mark...bravo.
Thanks for the coin-compliments, comrades ... Oh, and thanks so much for posting your assarion coins (absolutely stunning and super interesting ... please keep 'em coming if you are still holding-back!!)
