Dave Surber, creator and owner of Wildwinds, a site most ancient collectors know and love...a huge boone to us....passed away last Friday at the age of 49. He contributed so much to the hobby, he will be missed, and lets hope someone takes over the site because we all know wildwinds, from way back, has been one of the biggest aids to collectors. http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2009/02/25/MNSURBERDA14.DTL
One thing I think should also be mentioned because I think it is the most important aspect of wildwinds and Mr. Surber. This was not his job, this was his hobby. He made his money in other ways...this was pure...as it was put on another forum...a great gift to collectors by a person who did this out of a love for it, in his free time. It wasnt about money.
What a shame.. so young. That website is amazing too. I can't imagine the work that went into that. I haven't learned much about ancients yet but I just spent quite a bit of time searching his website. Sorry to hear about this. I'm sure he will be missed greatly.
I never visited the website but he sounded like a great person. My condolences to his family and friends
The Numismatic Community (and especially collectors of ancient coins) have lost a leading light who provided a wonderful, almost indispensable, online research facility (WildWinds) free of charge for many years. Dave was a fine gentleman who died at such a young age -- he will be sorely missed. My heart goes out to his grieving family and many close friends. James
