[ancients] Legionary denarius of Mark Antony

I'd been wanting one of these for awhile now, and the CNG auction a few weeks ago surfaced almost two dozen from the Simon Shipp Collection. The best of them ended up closing well over $1000. Mine was amongst the cheapest (and most common in the series), but still a very nice example, I think. At some point I'd like to buy an extremely worn example as well... one of those that was kept in circulation into the 2nd or 3rd century.

I haven't been able to photograph this very well, so I'm using CNG's photo which captures some of the subtle blue toning around the devices on the reverse. The coin itself is nicer still in hand.

Please post your Mark Antony legionary denarii!

Nice example, I like the toning.

Never had a huge interest in buying one. Historical but I find them boring looks wise. And expensive considering how common they are.

It sucks to hear the prices are rising on these coins. I have been waiting for a decent one for a low price for awhile. I have seen a couple but then I didn't have the money for it or I ordered another coin. lol

That's a nice OP coin, Zumbly. Congrats!

That is a decent Legionary, zumbly, and nicely toned too. Legion XV.
I like them also, and pick them up whenever I find one for a reasonable price.

Here is one which I literally did pick up,( found actually), with a group of other denarii from Vespasian, Titus and Domitian. As you say, interesting how they circulated well into the 1st and 2. century. As expected, it is well worn and the name of the legion no longer visible.

    Sweet pick-up, Z

... sadly, I don't have one of these yet ... so hearing that they're becoming more expensive is not great news (although, I'm assuming that all coin prices are slowly increasing ... hopefully my paycheques continue to rise at least the same rate!!)

=> very nice eye-appeal on that baby (congrats)

BTW That's a very nice LEG XV. Let me know when you want to get rid of it. Here is my very poor example of LEG XV:

Very nice selection of legionaries, Bing!

Mat and Yoc, I did eventually get around to cleaning the dirt off those finds - It was mostly easy, it just came off. But, the legionary was worn quite a bit.

The one I've been watching for at a budget price is the Chortis Speculorum Legionary Denarius.

Bing, that makes two of us. The legionary Antiquae, and Chortis Speculatorum have been on my wish list for years.

Nice one Zumbly! I don't own one of these...yet. Another type to add to the list. ;)
