Sure, this coin may be a bit worn, but I think that it is very cool so I hit the bid-button!! => *beeeep* SPAIN, Emerita. Tiberius, Æ Dupondius 14-37 AD Diameter: 35 mm Weight: 23.85 grams Obverse: Laureate head left Reverse: City-view seen from aerial perspective: city wall with five T-shaped crenellations fronted by main gate consisting of two arched bays flanked by two multi-story crenellated towers, each with arched window; gate inscribed AVGVSTA/EMERITA and decorated with four T-shaped crenellations Reference: ACIP 3407a; RPC I 41 Other: 9h … nice black patina Ex Archer M. Huntington Collection (HSA 1001.1.21689) NOTE => here is a slightly less worn example (not my coin) which explains the reverse-description a bit more clearly than my poor lil' 35mm x 24 gram coin ...
A precursor to the LRB campgates - very nice! There's such a wide range of interesting coins from Emerita. You could spend a lifetime specializing in them.
Oh sorry => please feel free to post any of your Tiberius winners, or your Emerita Spain winners ..... ummm, or even any of your big, fat dupondius winners!! I love seeing your coins!! (they always give me new collecting-directions to explore)
You forgot to invite other provincial campgates like this Septimius pair from Anchialus. Early (magistrate Barbarus) on top, later (Ulpian) below:
Nice pickup, but if you think your new Dupondius is worn, take a look at my coin which happens to be an As of the same variety: TIBERIUS AE 25mm (As) OBVERSE: TI CAESAR AVGVSTVS PON MAX IMP, laureate head left REVERSE: COL AVGVSTA EMERITA, campgate Struck at Emerita, Spain, 14-36 AD 9.27g, 25mm RPC 42
I'd grace your thread with a Tiberius, buuuttt I don't have a coin of him at the moment Cool new pickup steve!
Thanks Jango ... I'm sure that one will eventually make it into your cool stable!! Wow, iamTiberius => I would have figured that you'd have a whole crap-load of Tiberius examples?!! (well, considering your name and all?) ... cheers, brother!! (fantastic tribute penny)
Unfortunately I was an underbidder on two Emerita coins in that auction, so I have none of them to show. Bah. Yours is pretty eye catching, I love those city gates!
