    During the past three weeks, I have been dreaming about scoring this sweet over-strike ...

    => it's an awesome Minerva over-strike
    => on an Oiniadai, Akarnanian man-headed bull under-coin

    => it's a prow over-strike
    => on a sweet Zeus portrait under-coin

    Yah, this baby can't lose!! (I absolutely love it!!)

    Okay, sure => it's a bit weird and it's not a "minty" coin ... but oh my God

    => this may be the coolest coin in my collection ... I hope you dudes like it

    Oh, the big brown overstrike is my new baby (and the lil' green example is merely a typical example of the host-coin)

    :rolleyes:

    ... pretty cool, eh?

    I knew it! I knew you would bid on that coin. It had "Steve" written all over it. Two coins for the price of one - and economical because you only need one flip. :)

    I love it. It beats all my overstrikes by a mile. You're lucky if you can ID the undertype at all. This is just amazing.

    Yah, I love threads that have good participation ... ummm, isn't that why we buy and post our coins? (I love seeing your coins and I sure hope that I'm keeping-up my end of the ol' bargain!!?)

    post anything ... overstrikes, man-bull coins, Minerva coins, Zeus coins ... brown coins, green coins ... coins!!

    ;)

    I'm pretty happy with this month's score (please pile-on)

    cheers, gang (ho-ho, fricken ho!!)

    Ummm, perhaps I should step-up and toss-in an example?

    Yah, this year really has been the year that I decided that weird over-strikes are cool ...

    => here is another very cool example that I scored this year ...

    Boeotia Federal Coinage Overstrike.jpg

    Here is the host coin (spot the cool "under-horse" and "under-portrait") ... fun, eh?

    ... man, maybe I'm off my rocker, but I love these weird over-strikes and counter-marks, etc (I guess I like to think about the "travels" that my sweet coins have endured?) ... I like my coins

    Used to love Thomas the Tank Engine as a little kid (around two decades ago) so I enjoyed the reference :D

    And awesome coin! I really need more Republicans in my collection, especially something with Janus on it.

    Sorry Steve, but my 5 year old says it doesn't look like Thomas. He just said that's an ancient head and not a Thomas. The expert has spoken.

    Never mind Steve, he changed his mind. Now he says it's Thomas. I'm starting to question his expertize. Maybe I shouldn't be getting coin advise from a 5 year old. :meh:

    Now that I'm home and at my computer, I do have a couple of overstrikes and Minerva-headed trientes but I'll only share two(only one of which is an overstrike):

    This first one, I really, really wish I could determine the undertype. It's a really cool and beautiful coin but it would be so much cooler if I could figure out what it's overstruck on. This comes from a series of bronzes that were overstruck near the end of the Second Punic War on captured enemy coins at half the weight standard of the same denominations being minted at the Rome mint and the series was not identified by Crawford. Likely the undertype is a Sicilian, Sardinian or Punic bronze, and I've spent a lot of time squinting and looking and rotating the coin but I just can't figure it out.
    NavillePic.jpg
    Roman Republic Æ Triens(20.5mm, 5.75g), anonymous, after 211 BC. Helmeted head of Minerva right; above, four pellets / ROMA. Prow right with flat-topped deck structure; below four pellets. Crawford cf. 56/4. McCabe group H1(halfweight overstrikes). Ex. Vecchi sale 3, 1996

    This next one is a later Minerva-head triens of a very different style that I just recently purchased. Still waiting for it to ship actually. It was misidentified by the dealer actually, and the actual type is a bit scarcer than the original attribution would suggest(highlighting the importance of paying attention on your attributions). This is one of those bronzes that is so scarce in decent condition that even the RBW example was a fairly ugly one
    LACPic.jpg
    Roman Republic Æ Triens(21mm, 7.29g), Valerius moneyer, 169-158 BC. Helmeted head of Minerva right; above, four pellets / Prow right with peaked deck structure; VAL monogram above; four pellets before; ROMA below. Crawford 191/3. Sydenham 356b. Babelon Valeria 3

    Unfortunately, I don't have any overstrikes (at least I can't see anything)....so I'll post a Triens just to keep things moving along.

    BTW: Great coins 'RED'!!!

    Anonymous (Romans were such a humble people:rolleyes:), after 211BC, Rome mint
    Helmeted head of Mercury right, four pellets above
    ROMA, prow of Galley right, four pellets below
    Crawford 56/4, Sydenham 143b; 23.2 mm, 4.38 grams

    I posted what I thought of this coin on another thread so I won't say here lest I give Steve a swollen head. I agree with the Thomas reference and suggest you send it for an official Sir Topham Hatt certification (you have my address, right?).
