*whatev* ... I needed this random Roman coin-injection!! (ahhhhhhhh, that's the one!!!) .... *phew* .... Yah, I think that this coin is pretty cool ... Magnentius AE Centenionalis (Lyons mint) Date: 350-353 AD Diameter: 22.4 mm Weight: 5.9 grams Obverse: D N MAGNENTIVS P F AVG - Draped and cuirassed bust of Magnentius Reverse: SALVS DD NN AVG ET CAES - Large Chi-Rho; A - W at sides, PPLG[dot] in exergue References: RIC 158 Characteristics: very cool Yah, I kinda thought that Magnentius looked a bit like Nancy, from the ol' newspaper comics? (am I wrong?) ... pretty tough lookin', eh? => apparently he was a Junk-yard dawg!!?
Ummm, I'm pretty sure that this is my first Chi-Rho example ... => so please feel free to post your Magnentius examples and/or your sweet Chi-Rho examples ... Cheers, gang Apparently will-power is highly over-rated where ancient coins are concerned?!
Very nice! I love the portrait I have seen more embarrassing portraits, but your coin is an eye opener for sure. Here is a Constantius Siliqua ( to expensive for me). He has the "who farted" look on him
=> ahahaha, he does look a bit startled!! Wow, apparently Magnentius had one hell of a neck, eh?!! => TOUGH, LIKE STUMP!! ... huh, 22.4 mm and 5.9 grams (that's quite a hunk)
Ummm, I don't quite understand the "A & W" on the reverse? .... does anybody/everybody know the answer? (thanks, gang)
I often wonder how many Magnentius coins are barbarous. Your style looks closer to normal for Amiens but Lyons is usually slimmer. I never know if Steve is serious or not but A&W has a web page that covers it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alpha_and_Omega
I've watched these for years and never found one within my budget. I like your new coin little brother, even with Nancy's portrait. I only have one Magnentius MAGNENTIUS AE3 OBVERSE: DN MAGNENTIVS P F AVG - Bare-headed, draped and cuirassed bust right; "A" behind bust REVERSE: VICTORIAE DD NN AVG ET CAE, two Victories standing facing each other, holding wreath between them inscribed VOT V MVLT X in four lines. Epsilon over IS in lower centre. Mintmark PAR in exergue Struck at Arelate 350-3 AD 3.8g, 20mm Arles RIC VIII 177
=> thanks Doug (yah, you read me like a fricken book => I was oblivious to the meaning ... however, now it is safely tucked inside "the vault" ... until tomorrow)
Thanks for the coinpliments, fellas ... cool coin additions (please keep 'em coming!!) Bing => this thingy was $68 US (delivered) ... I'm never sure if you think my deals are good, or not?
And I had gone all day without learning something new. I was in a blissful bonehead state and you ruined it. Leave it to you ancient guys...
I don't show this one very often because of the shame it feels for brokenness but I bought it as a good example of the Trier Cat horse. I do not believe this one is barbarous. Trier just liked catfaced horses.
Wow, the cat-faced horse is awesome!! (wish-list) => so Doug, you think that my new example may be barbarous? ... interesting (I don't have a barbarous coin, yet)
Very nice coin, Steve! Even though I collect quite a few LRB's, I haven't yet acquired any of the interesting types of Magnentius and Decentius: the large Chi-Rho and Horseman. Maybe I'll find something at the show this week... I wasn't aware of the cat-faced horse variety. It's fantastic! Definitely on my want list.
