Hi all, I'm looking for an easy to understand website to help with the tanslations on Roman provincials with Greek legends. Particularly the coins of Arabia Province. Thanks in advance for your help.
I don't know of any sites, maybe someone else does. I've picked things up from books and members at FORVM. This might give you start, from Varbanov...
Thanks John I'm trying to tanslate the Trajan Bostra coins AVT KAIC NEP TPAIAN CEB GEPM DAK on the obverse and DHMAPXEX IH YPATO on the reverse. I've got : Augustus Caesar Nero Trajan ? Germania ? on the obverse and nothing on the reverse. There is a date in there somewhere.
IMPERATOR CAESAR NERVA TRIANVS AVGVSTVS GERMANICVS DACIVS. DHMAPX EX = TR P. YPATO = COS. The letters after those give you the TR P and COS numbers in Greek numerals.
I haven't seen IH on these coins. Perhaps you've misread it? Are you looking at a specific coin? If you don't want to post it in the thread, PM me. The legend on my coin reads... Obv.: AVTOKP KAIC NEP TPAIANW APICTW CEB ΓEPM ΔAK Reverse: ΔHMAPX EΞ VΠATO S It's the camel type. Are you looking at the Arabia standing type?
Yup, I found it. 18 refers to his tribunician powers, which were renewed every year. Trajan ruled for 19 years.
Thanks John. I'm never sure about posting images, copy rights and all that. What is the protocol on that anyway? Maybe I should start another thread?
I thought you were talking about a coin that you wanted to buy, in which case it's unwise to post it in an open forum, just because someone might snatch it away from you. That's why I suggested PM. But those coins are part of his collection and not for sale. It's perfectly legal to post a pic of the coin along as long as you give the source - unless the owner of the image specifically forbids it. Dealers don't do that because advertising is always a good thing.
I am looking at a coin to buy, but I would have posted Zach's coin for reference in our discussion had I thought it was ok to do so. Now I know. Thanks.
