No, Steve, I didn't mean four bucks What i meant was I just received a Constantine II which I paid $4 a couple of weeks ago. I don't generally collect LRBs, but once in a while I add to my collection one that catches my eye for whatever reason. This particular coin is definitely not rare and it's not in the best or worse shape. I just liked it. Enjoy. CONSTANTINE II AE Follis OBVERSE: CONSTANTINVS IVN NOB C, laureate, cuirassed bust right REVERSE: / GLOR-IA EXERC-ITVS, two soldiers holding spears and shields with one standard between them. Mintmark epsilon SIS Struck at Siscia 337-348 AD 16mm RIC VII 253
Nice one. Here is my example from Thessalonika. Was one of my first two ancients ever so it holds a special place in my collection:
that's a pretty good one bing, nice bust and soldier details and that mint mark couldn't be sharper really.
Doucet posted a Constantinople commemorative with said reverse. These are a tough variety to find. I have an VRBS ROMA version...
Funny ... I don't have a single example of that revese-type (dudes standing with standard(s) in between them) ... and that seems to be kinda like "the little black dress" of ancient coins (man, I need more coins!)
What is it that makes us like one of these over another? Certainly some will prefer high grade. I like the portrait style on this Dalmatius but I suppose it gets some extra credit from being a less common ruler. JA's favorite has a nice wreath. I can't say I recall knowing anyone who specialized in the two soldiers types. They lack the variety of many of the FTR issues or campgates. What makes a coin special when its type is not?
I took up your challenge of finding Constans 2/2's from every mint. I have six so far, including the coin from Arles posted above. The others are proving elusive.
