ANCIENTS: Baltimore Show report part 2 - 3 late Romans I liked

The Baltimore show also produced these three coins I found appealing. Of the three my favorite is this Crispus from Rome with Roma reverse and the script Eros mintmark which I have described online recently enough used on other coins. It is much less common on the Roma Aeternae reverse. I am trying to get the set on these (two reverses each for five rulers) but have not seen even half of them so far. This is the nicest one I have from the series. I paid too much from a dealer whose coins are too good for me. This was the last coin I bought before leaving the show. I know that I would have regretted leaving it. I am already having buyer's remorse about a few of the coins I got at Baltimore but not about this one. If I were to rewrite that thread from the other place about my favorite 25 coins, this would make the list.

Second is a Constantine I from Ticinum with Mars the Conservator reverse. It would have been better if the reverse were centered better but it is not a common coin and the price was right.

Lowest grade of this set of three is one some might prefer because it is a less common ruler, Allectus. It was affordable because of the obverse roughness but it has decent detail and a common but stronger than usual reverse. This is only my second Allectus so I am very glad to have it.

These three coins and yesterday's pair of Faustas would have made the trip to the show worthwhile to me but there are a few more for another post, another day. It was a very good show. I went to the show hoping to find a few specific items and did not see any of them. Being a general collector and keeping an open mind usually allows returning with many treasures and no cash.

All three are lovely coins. I especially like the Allectus.

You are right, none are common coins. I really like the first.

Beautiful Crispus. Great detail both obverse and reverse. I also like the Allectus mostly because I only have two and I do not have this reverse, common as it may be.

The Crispus is magnificent. I would have probably overpaid for it as well, whatever "overpaid" means in the context of acquiring a piece like that.

I think I would have trouble selling it immediately for what I paid. I won't be finding out. It all averages out in the long run but some coins may take a century to catch up with foolish purchasing.

Maybe its just me, but if a coin runs $80, and i get $80 wortg of pleasure owning it then idc what it sells for when i am gone. It was worth it to me at the time, any residual value is just a bonus for my heirs.

You know me Doug, i am cheap too, but if you start cheap like us i don't think our stretches for coins we love are that bad. :)

I'd never sell the Crispus, so the notion of overpaying would be non sequiter.

My advice has always been to spend on coins only money you might have spent going out to eat at a restaurant. The next day you can still enjoy the coin; the meal, not so much. Today I ate at Taco Bell and my bill was $1.77. It is getting hard to get a nice ancient for $1.77 so I may have to start eating more.

I like all three but you might understand why I wanted the new one.

Alas poor Crispus. Framed by his step mother. Executed by his father. However, Constantine found out about Faustina's treachery after he ordered his sons death and had her boiled alive. Hey great coin DS.

[TD="align: left"]I found an ancient coin while playing in a patch of undeveloped area in Sarasota Florida. The poured and stamped metal has a crest on one side and the other shows the number 2 on the top edge and below that is a centered grid. On the grid marks a V / ? V1 / ?
Any ideas? Yes, I am a novice and would love your expert ideas. Even "sounds like" brain storming would be greatly appreciated. Have a fantastic week...

    Thank You,

Joan, I would also suggest to modify your post. I would not post your email account on an internet board where people can easily add it to junk mail lists. :)
