I really want to do a tribute to all the coins of 2015 that curled my toes, that ones that made me log off Coin Talk and search one for one of the type. A tribute to those coins shown here, this year that truly invoked an emotional response and really stand out in my mind. With a little under a month remaining in 2015, I still feel very confident in my selections, although made be a bit premature.

Oh an uber uber early coin, maybe one of the first. This will remain on the list. Anyone interested in the earliest forms of true coins with set values like me would certainly have to own this coin. Well done AJ, but how could we expect anything less than Super Duper Awesome. Thanks for sharing.

Ancient Japan Native First Circulating Nara Period Coin. Super awesome, super rare, man I want one. I need one for my one of each collection. AHHHH!!! Certainly on of the best and most desirable "washers" ever made. I would like it more if it were mine.

This ridiculously high grade Demetrius I of Bactria tetradrachm with the elephant headdress. I mean seriously...As a collector of Asian coins, I wasn't sure if I should sit down or stand up. I would handle the crap out of that coin and it would be aFine by the end of the week.

This hold the number one spot as bucket coin. I swear I will own this coin before I die.

A fine silver imitation of a Tiberius denarius from India. You wont believe the lengths I have gone to find this coin and failed. Probably one of favorites and certainly my favorite DS coin. It's a type I need for my collection. Well done DS, you truly are the Apex Bottom feeder. Dealers hide your junk box!

That's a very interesting idea of a top. I'd say my favorite posters here would be (in no particular order) @dougsmit - for his eclectic taste and great photography skills, @maridvnvm - for his Tacitus and Probus focuses and @ValiantKnight - for his 5th century rarities and their stories.

That's a very cool idea, Noob => but I have such a poor memory, that I'd have to wander back through all of the posts to find my Top-5 favourite coins from other members (man, I'm gonna find it difficult enough just to pick my own Top-5!!)

However, any of AJ's coins would probably make my Top-5 (he almost has to be removed from the list, for he's a bit like Michael Jordan, Wayne Gretzky and/or Tiger Woods on a hot-streak => yup, nobody can even come close to competing with Mr Bond!!)

TIF and Z-bro always seem to have very similar coin-tastes to my own, so I tend to love most of their coins!!

Oh, and Seth is correct in choosing Doug & Martin ... man, it is pretty impressive when they get into a Sep-Sev cat-fight and start trying to impress each other by showing their rare types (sadly, I just skim through most of them and think to myself "how little coin-skills I possess!!") ... *sigh*

Then there are the coin-site "grinders" that consistently pump-up cool examples => JA, Bing, Jango, Noob, chrsmat, Pish, Eng, Mat, Race, Ardy, Medman, Q, Gil-galad, Alegandalf, Mikey-Z, Smeagol, Oki and a few others that I'm probably forgetting at the moment (sorry) => yah, every now and then one of these dudes finds an absolute gem and I'm totally jealous!!

Oh, and now there seems to be a whole handful of new members with awesome coin-examples ... yah, I admit that I haven't quite figured-out who is who yet, so I am merely lumping most of them together, but they all seem to have fantastic coin-skills => yup, the quality of coins shown on this site has definitely been elevated lately ... it is awesome having this injection of new coin-blood to raise the ol' bar a few inches, eh?!!)

Ummm, but I think I have the coolest coins by far, so I totally win!!

    :woot:

    ... just jokes ...

Noob, if I get a free sec on the weekend, I'll try to find 5 winners from 2015

While honored with the #1 position, I must point out that the Indian Tribute Penny has been mine since 1988. It was not a 2015 baby. Through the 90's we saw them offered with some regularity and maybe one a year since then. I suspect there was a single find and most currently reside in collections of people who intend to die with their coins. We had one in 2007 when the seller did not even consider it worthy of a solo listing.

To me, the most interesting part of our 'best of' listings is how differently we rank the coins. Many would name any AJ coin but few one of mine. I have my top 10 of the year ready to go with one coin costing $15.50. I'm hoping not to get something in the next couple weeks that bumps it from its current position.

Ancientnoob: A very eclectic set of coin that usually falls into a category of something new to learn. If budgets were higher & could retain the info of his speciality better then roman/greek, I could easily collect many in his field.

Oki: Even though he mainly buys Hadrian coinage, many of them are great rarities and beauties. I have seen some wonderful eastern coinage of Hadrian I never knew existed, some Tetradrachms that amaze me and just regular denarii that have great looks to them.

Steve: Even though he loves animals, his collection is also eclectic and many coins I would love to add.

Doug: A little bit of everything.

Cyrrhus: He's got some great tetradrachms that I drool over & would love to start adding types of in 2016.

Bing: Has wonder roman republics and knowing him, got many at bottom feeding prices.

Valentinian: Still cant find much love with Tetrarchy/Constantinian era coinage but I do like the later LRBs from Valentinian & later. He has some wonder coins of this time i'm always surprised to see in nice shape for their periods.

Everyone has had coins I have been jealous off, but the folk above have made me jealous many more times.

Like Pish, I couldn't possibly pick only five from our collecting group, no matter how hard I tried......it seems that EVERYONE has at least five coins I would kill for LOL (we'll exclude AJ and IOM for now, since I'm already holding them for ransom).

My five would probably be an easy task, since I've been running a budget hunt in every direction over the past year.....and that probably tops my total best of the year by any measure.

Steve seems to have expressed my words better I could in his post.

I think we are all nuts, which is essential to be a numismatist. This is one I have been looking for in most excellent condition. Most you see on the market are heavily worn, clean, and very grungy. It was a rip from CNG this year. I think most people mistook it for just another Justinian I. My good fortune.

It is a very rare Justin II struck only at the Theopolis mint. The year II is even scarcer. I'm still looking for that one. Shortly after I acquired half-follis which I believe is much rarer. The half folles were struck with follis dies on smaller flans; it is also a yr. I. I hug it, and love it, and call it George.

    Cheers to all
