At first I thought this Tyche coin looked kinda sweet ... but then when I saw that it also had a leaping "ram" on it => well then, I knew I had to have it!! Syria, Seleucis and Pieria, Philip I Æ 8 Assaria AD 244-249 Antioch mint Diameter: 30 mm Weight: 16.39 grams Obverse: Radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Philip I right Reverse: Turreted, veiled, and draped bust of Tyche right; above, ram leaping right, head left; Δ-Є and S-C across field Reference: McAlee 990 Other: 6h … VF, earthen green patina, areas of light roughness
That is a most excellent coin. I rarely get envious of someone else's coins, but this one make me green. I'm sure that set you back a bit - those are not common issues by any stretch of the imagination, especially in such a high grade. Syrian climate was not the least bit friendly to coins.
That's a beautiful coin. I know you like them animals. Maybe too much. Great patina, it really highlights this coin.
??? Maybe I just see more coins, but I would say these are rather common. Particularly for Philip and his family.
I agree. Nice coins, I love the Tyche portrait, but not a scarce coin compared to other Roman Provincials. Not saying anything bad about the coin, I would like to own one, but just commenting on scarcity.
I agree these are pretty common and I am not terribly impressed by the surfaces but what this coin has going for it is the face of Tyche. You got the young, pretty model. Compare to mine which has the matronly Tyche. Yours has a very prominent sprue break (not a good thing) and roughness over what I'd consider high end but the style makes it a decent coin. ...and these are really hard to separate from father and son versions. I call mine Philip II. You could call yours whoever you want and find someone to agree with you.
Thanks for the coin compliments, comrades .... I always appreciate feed-back (good, bad, or ugly) => I'm lovin' this coin!! It is Tyche, it's desert patina, it's 30mm "big" and 16.39 grams "plump" ... => this dawg Rocks!!! Rarity ... ummm, I really wasn't too sure ... loveability => 200 Rating!! CNG-dude => I would "love" to have your job ... the fact that you see soooo many awesome coins passing-by ... => ultimate Dream-job!! (well, and wine taster) ... Thanks again for your comments!!
dougsmit => I'm lovin' your coin as well => it is very sweet (I like my desert look, because, well just because => I love the desert patina look!!) ... ... but I agree that your example is in slightly better shape than my loveable lil' pup!! (I think that both are gorgeous coin(s) ... man, I should get out more, for I myself haven't seen too many of these dawgs)
Oh, and where are my manners => "Hi Echi" => long-time, no hear!! (I miss your news & I miss you your classic coins) ... ummm, how is the ol' 207 Rulers thread going? (still alive-n-well, I hope?) ... oh, and how 'bout the "SMACKDOWN" series? (still alive, or have they burnt-out?) => If they're still alive, I'm assuming that maridvnvm, or Batman is mopping-up the floor with the competition? (yah, their coins rock!!! ... it is very sad that Doug doesn't toss-in his wares!! ... legendary!!) ... anyway ... again "howdy", I hope all is well in the CCF-world and more importantly, in "your" world" Cheers, echi!!
This is now five posts-in-a-row ... yup, now I'm just rambling ... lalalalalalalalalala-didididi-dadadad!! Oh, did I mention that I loved my new coin?
Stevex6...my Canadian brother from the great white north. Not only is that coin nice, I'm a fan of desert patinas as well. But I must say you, or whoever took that pic's got some mad photo skillz. The quality on that picture is outstanding! Is that your photo?
ahahaha => thanks Race!! .... man, I always love hearing from ya, brother!! (you rock!!) Ummm, but sadly, that great lookin' photo is the seller's photo (yah, although I think that I'm very artistic => I'm a very good sketcher/drawer, and an above average painter, oh and I'm an outstanding draftsman => apparently I absolutely "suck" at coin photography!!) ... so again, all/most of my coin-photos are the seller's photos ... but thanks (yah, I think that the coin is a winner!!) Cheers
