Slowly ID'ing some of the coins I got in the last lot. And rather than creating a thread for each coin from the lot I'm going to keep adding them to one thread so I don't crowd the forum. 1. Gordian III Sestertius 238-244 A.D. AE 29mm 21.1 grams O: IMP GORDIANVS PIVS FEL AVG, laureate head right R: LIBERTAS AVG S C, Libertas standing left with pileus and scepter 2. Maximinus I Denarius 235 – 238 A.D. 20mm 3.0 grams O: IMP MAXIMNVS PIV AVG Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right R: PAX AVGVSTI, Pax standing left with branch and scepter Still got a couple more to go.
Really like the Maximinus, but I'm a sucker for silver. The Gordian looks well worn, but not a bad coin. Make sure that's not BD, especially that on the reverse.
I like the look of the Max Thrax too. I'll also echo Bing's warning to check that Gordian's reverse for BD.
The Maximinus is splendid and the Gordian is, um...well, it's a dog. But that's what happens when you buy larger lots sometimes. I've gotten a few dogs in lots that I was buying for the sake of other coins that I wanted. C'est la vie. But the Maximinus really is splendid!
If the green stuff is fuzzy and soft, it needs to be eradicated. If it's hard there is probably no reason to be concerned.
"Gently" explore with a wooden toothpick ... if no green powder is present, then leave the awesome green crusties in-tact!! => love your new additions (good luck with the toothpick, my friend) ... yah, that is the only down-side to the super-cool AE coins (bronze disease can quickly take the fun outta the whole thingy) ... but again, green is awesome unless it is flaky and powdery ... Cheers
Ok, I prodded the green stuff and its not flaky, fuzzy or powdery. I think I'm going to leave it alone. Still trying to ID the rest. One of them is kinda tough.
awesome => that's fantastic coin-news (yah, monitoring is always better than aggressive therapy) Cheers
ID'ed another one. Theodosius I Alexandria mint 379-395 A.D. AE 13mm, 1.3 grams O: THEODOSIVS P F AVG, pearl diademed, draped and cuirassed bust right R: VOT X MLT XX within wreath, ALEG in exergue RIC 13c Its small, chipped, off centered and hard to photograph, definitely was one I did not want, but it came with the lot. I promise the next one will be a better coin.
well its better, but not by much. Constantine I 324 A.D. AE 19mm, 3 grams O: CONSTANTINVS AVG, laureate head right R: DN CONSTANTINI MAX AVG ,VOT XX within wreath, exergue SMHB Thats it for now. When I get the itch to buy more coins, I will post more up.
