I picked this coin at our last show, we are setting up the PNNA (Pacific NW Numismatic Association) coin show today, for 3 days of coin heaven, there will be 100 tables, should have 3 or 4 dealers selling Ancients..:hail: i will show off any coins i pick up over the next 3 days...:)

    Clodius Albinus..
    As Caesar..193 - 195..AD..
    AR Denarius
    Ob..bare head right..
    Rev.Minerva standing facing, head left,

Nice coin and a great pickup. Scarce emperor that I don't have and probably not for some time either.

Must be nice going to a coin show and finding ancient coins. I don't have that option, unfortunately. Sometimes I wonder how prices compare to online shops.

At least at my local coin show, prices seem a bit less than I would imagine those particular coins would go for online, but it's not like they are steals. Definitely the plus though is being able to check them out before buying.

    Nice coin btw eng

I haven't seen actual snow since I was very young. I really want to go up north during winter sometime in the future.

How is it that this coin was minted in Rome? Rome was never under Albinus' purview. His headquarters were in Lugdumun until he was defeated by Severus. Was it minted under the authority of Severus during the brief time they were allied?

Wow great background Eng. I wish we still displayed heads, there are quite a few that I wouldn't mind driving to Washington DC to see. I hope you have a blast at the show. I will be going to a large show in Westchester NY with one of the other CT members. There is supposed to be 100 tables with Ancients Guys. I think Pegasi numismatics will be there. Anyhoo, thats a neat coin.

When Didius Julianus' purchase of the Purple thouroughly grossed out most Romans, three generals rose to put him down. Didius lasted a few seconds leaving the three to decide who was emperor. Septimius Severus quickly allied with Clodius Albinus whom he named Caesar and issued coins with that title like the one shown here. That freed Septimius to do away with Pescennius Niger without having to fight on two fronts. After Pescennius was gone, Septimius named his son Caracalla Caesar and Clodius realized his alliance was finished. At that point he started issuing coins as Augustus from Lugdunum. These are considerably less common than the Caesar issues that were issued in his name by Septimius from Rome (and the rare ones from Alexandria but that is another tale for another day).

I have only one Clodius Albinus as Augustus from Lugdunum. They are easily identified by the AVG at the end of the obverse legend and the very different style. Mine is a little stranger than most because the reverse die is strongly clashed making it look more crude than normal. This one has the Genius of Lugdunum reverse GEN LVG COS II.
