My latest addition is a Antoninus Pius tetradrachm that I got a couple of weeks ago. It had bad photos so I got it pretty cheap. It does have shiny surfaces so it made it hard to take photos. So it wont win a beauty contest but I like it anyways & who doesnt like hefty silver! I did have trouble finding another like it. I found some with a Laureate head but not bare. It took Dane of Wildwinds to properly ID it for me. It will also be tossed on wildwinds when she has the time. Antoninus Pius, (138A.D. - (161 A.D) Billon Tetradrachm O: AVT K T AIL ADR ANTWNINOC CEV CEB, bare head right. R: L - B (year 2), Dikaiosyne standing left, holding scales and cornucopiae. Alexandria mint, 138 - 139 A.D 12.7g 24mm Milne 1576
http://www.acsearch.info/record.html?id=224493 It was a nice coin before the cleaners got to it. It may look better again in a few decades. Unless I am reading Emmitt incorrectly, it is a rarity 1.
I actually found that exact coin on forvm when I looked, notice it says "laureate head right" when it wasnt. Dane gave me the extra info on it so I pretty much dismissed this one you linked too cause it didnt look like I could trust the Forvm attribution on this.
One learns something new every day. I went to post this Antoninus Pius Tetradrachm and tried to find out what the Greek inscription "LTPI TOY" meant. Obverse: Draped and cuirassed bust right with aegis AΥT K T AIΛ AΔP ANTWNINOC EΥC (Augustus Caesar Antoninus Pius) Reverse: Dikaiosyne seated left, scales in right, cornucopia in right LTPI TOY (Regnal Year 3, see below) Metal: Billon (low grade silver) Size: 23mm Weight: 12.94gm Catalog: Milne 1619 var Struck: AD 139-140 Alexandria Egypt It turns out that "LTPI TOY" is actually "L TPITOY", the Regnal Year, the 'L' is "Year" and "TPITOY" is "Three" spelled out. I can't say I have an APius tet though and I am jealous of yours! I really want the APius Isis tet but there are too many other coins on the want list before I get one
Great coin Mat! Congrats! I have a Nero Tet that I have been trying to figure out the date and legend. Thanks for the source info!
