One of my black Friday pickups from our very own JA, which i purchased off the want ads at the bottom of this forum. He shipped very fast, one would rate this transaction 3 thumbs up... I have a couple sestertii.(Seys-TER-te-e) still can't pronounce this one. Philip l ...246-247..AD. Ob. laureate, draped, cuirassed bust right. Rev. Moesia standing facing head left, arms out stretched over lion and bull. AN Vlll in Ex. year 8 Viminaciuna Moesia Superior Pound skipper..30mm x 18.59 g. If you have some Philip coins post them up...
Philip I Antoninianus Philip I & Tyche (Syria, AE 8 Assaria) Philip II & Serapis (Moesia Inferior, Marcianopolis AE As)
I never managed to get a good pic of that coin because it's so dark. I like your shots - here are a couple I took in bright sunlight which you're welcome to have as well... I've always thought this piece was one of the better examples of the Vimanacium types - they're generally quite mushy on account of being cast rather than struck, particularly the reverses. I'm glad you like it! It's a nice big chunk of a coin to hold in your hand.
I read somewhere that the lion and the bull represented the two legions station in Vimanacium. Nice pick up.
Steve? If you're shopping for presents, could you get me those second two coins in your post? Please?
Here's one of the nicer Philip II sestertii I've collected. This one is also ex-JA. Philip I and II seated on curule chairs...
Nice addition. My philip Philip I (244 - 249 A.D.) O: IMP M IVL PHILIPPVS AVG, Radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right, from behind. R: LIBERALITAS AVGG II, Liberalitas standing left, counting board in right, cornucopia in left. Rome 21mm 5.8g RIC IV 38b, RSC IV 87 SRCV III 8937
I've not heard this. Do you have a reference where it is discussed? My coins are in the bank so I can't look today but I'd never noticed them as particularly mushy.
Wow, nice collection Doug! You just need a few more for a complete date set. I guess mushy is in the eye of the beholder, and no, I don't have a reference - just talking off the top of my head. I could be confusing them with certain Syrian provincials that were cast.
I do not know them either. I have not been a Provincial specialist and only have a few cast coins. Of course many of my coins are mushy just from being low end. While at it, a collector of Viminacium might want to get one Provincia Dacia like this Volusian. They are similar but have different animals (eagle and lion). I really need to reshoot this one.
Holy schmokes, Doug!! => that's a fantastic collection of coins!! (Lions & Bulls everywhere!!) => out-standing!!
