This is a new pickup, my first Marcus Aurelius coin. it came with a lot tag from 1961, this tag has the reverse as VOTA SOL DECENN COS lll and has the Mint Trier, i don't see this on wildwinds. the place i purchased this coin has reverse as VOTA SVSCEP DECENN ll COS lll and has the Mint Rome, which i don't see on the coin, but wildwinds has it as RIC 251. what do you say!! Post any Marcus Aurelius you have, Marcus Aurelius..161 - 180..AD.. Ar Denarius.. Obv. laureate head right.. Rev. Marcus Aurelius, veiled standing left sacrificing out of patera over tripod. Rev,VOTA SOL DECENN COS lll on coin.. Rome mint.. 18mm x 2.86g.
Its rome mint. Mine: Marcus Aurelius (161 - 180 A.D.) AR Denarius O: M ANTONINVS AVG GERM SARM, Laureate head right. R: TR P XXX IMP VIII COS III, Roma standing left holding Victory and spear. 3.5g 19.38mm RIC 352; RSC 929a; BMC 669
Martin has it correct: Marcus Aurelius Denarius. IMP M ANTONINVS AVG TR P XXV, laureate head right VOTA SOL DECENN, COS III in ex, Emperor standing left with roll, sacrificing out of patera into lighted altar; prostrate bull at foot; Rome mint Not a bad coin at all. I love the portrait John. Excellent addition.
How about a half decent portrait of a younger Aurelius as Caesar under Pius. Marcus Aurelius Denarius Obv:– AVRELIVS CAESAR ANTONINI AVG PII FIL, bare head right Rev:– TR POT VI COS II / CLEM, Clementia standing right, head left, holding patera and drawing out drapery from legs Minted in Rome mint. A.D. 151-152 Reference:– BMCRE (Pius) 70. Cohen 25a. RIC III Pius 456a. 19mm. 3.16g. Wonderfully high relief on the portrait. Ex. Wayne G. Sayles
I have a couple of poor quality Marcus Aurelius sestertii that are about 35 years apart: MARCUS AURELIUS AE Sestertius OBVERSE: AVRELIVS CAESAR AVG PII F COS, bare head right REVERSE: IVVENTAS S C, Juventas, wearing a long robe, standing left, holding a patera, sprinkling incense on a candelabrum Struck at Rome, 140 AD 12.4g, 27mm RIC 1232, C 393, S4831 MARCUS AURELIUS AE Sestertius OBVERSE: M ANTONINVS AVG GERM SARMATICVS, laureate head right REVERSE: TR P XXIX IMP VIII COS III S-C, Annona standing left, holding corn-ears & cornucopiae; modius with two corn-ears and poppy at her feet Struck at Rome, 175 AD 22.3g, 30mm RIC 1154
Thank you Martin, both sellers were wrong, i will change my info and thank you for taking the time to post. jw thanks for the info and very nice coins to you all. i got three coins for a very good price.
nice new coin ENG! is it me, or is MA looking up? i'm somewhat embarrassed to say i don't have a marcus aurelius coin to post.
Great new score, Eng ... sadly, I don't have any AR Marcus Aurelius examples ... ... but I do have this sweet ol' AE gryphon dawg of mine to toss into the mix!!
Steve's Aurelius drachm is 4 years younger than mine (and has a nose) but both are curly haired Caesar portraits while Pius was alive.
