Latest addition to my collection is a provincial of Marcus A. I picked up cheap. Also my first coin with a River God reverse, even if it is small Marcus Aurelius (161 - 180 A.D.) An interesting piece for sure. Ya gotta love those river gods. Very nice, Mat. I'm partial to these river god chilling out types myself. EUPHRATES Hanniballianus, AE4 TIBER Marcus Aurelius, As GLAUKOS Antoninus Pius, AE19 of LYDIA, Hierocaesarea And the big daddy of all river gods... NILUS Antoninus Pius, Drachm of Alexandria
If anyone gets interested in collecting river gods, the auction catalog Helios 3 (29-30 April, 2009) is essential. Someone assembled an amazing specialized collection of 402 Roman provincial coins with river gods which were offered as individual lots in that catalog.
Here is a river god from Hieropolis-Kastabala in eastern Cilicia. AE23, 6.90 grams. Veiled and turreted head of Tyche right River god Pyramos swimming right, eagle perched on his right hand Sear Greek Imperil 5549
Lovely coin. I wouldnt mind a bigger coin with a river god reverse but i'm not in a huge rush to get one right now.
Atta-boy, Mat => extremely cool addition (NOTE: slightly more cool if it had Athena bathing in a stream, right?) ... anyway ... I have a few sweet river-god coins to toss-into the coin-quagmire ... Antoninus Pius & Nilus (river-god) Trajan & Tyche with river-god Trident & Strymon (river-god ... Celtic?)
