I picked this one up a couple of years ago and have not seen one since. This coin comes from the currency period known as the last Kochosen. A period when coins were falling out of favor and the coins where highly debased.

During this time coins were backed not by gold but by rice. The value of this coin fell to about 1/150th of the very first coins minted a mere 60 years earlier. National currency would fall completely out of use by mid 10th century.

Rice would again be the currency of the land. Currency would not return until the late 16th century with the rise of the ruling Samurai class. The last official Japan minted coins would be issued around 958 AD with the Kengen Taiho.
