Bought this coin in 2007 from an Indian Coin seller. Got it for $500.

I contacted him again a few months back and he is ready to buy it back for $700. I was really shocked - Gold is up almost 150% but
the coin value has appreciated by just 40%.

Would be grateful if someone here can give me rough estimate what this coin really could be worth.

This is the description he had sent me -

Ruler:- Chandra Guptha - II - Also known as Vikranmadithya
    Weight:- 8.1 Grams
Observe:- King with arch and Brahmi Legend
    Reverse:- Lakshmi seated

Since it is an ancient coin it is worth more than melt. It is not 1/1 in value with spot prices. That is a very nice coin. Don't sell it to a dealer; list it on an auction site.

Two things are going on. One is there is a buy/sell spread so its hard to profit since he is taking a profit both directions. Second, its an ancient coin so not tied directly to gold, only very indirectly.

Its a cool coin, and a cool ruler. His deeds echo through India to this day.
