I was looking at some gold coins for sale online and came across this coin. Any ideas on a fair value to pay for it? Thanks for your time!
This ebay seller only gives a 30 day return option. I would get something like that only from a dealer with a lifetime return:https://www.ebay.com/itm/412-378-BC...818653?hash=item5d8024431d:g:HdsAAOSwzLFbcyCU I am not an expert and know nothing about electrum and gold coins but I know posters here at CT have shown fakes of these. @panzerman is a gold expert I believe.
I could not afford it right now anyway, however I was curious what a good price to pay for such a coin would possibly be. Thanks for your response.
Check out this vcoins page- they seem to range from $300. to $1750. with an average of about $750.https://www.vcoins.com/en/Search.aspx?search=true&searchQuery=el hekte lesbos&searchQueryExclude=&searchCategory=0&searchCategoryLevel=2&searchCategoryAncient=True&searchCategoryUs=True&searchCategoryWorld=True&searchCategoryMedieval=False&searchBetween=0&searchBetweenAnd=0&searchDate=&searchUseThesaurus=True&searchDisplayCurrency=&searchDisplay=1&searchIdStore=0&searchQueryAnyWords=&searchExactPhrase=&searchTitleAndDescription=True&searchDateType=0&searchMaxRecords=100&SearchOnSale=False&Unassigned=False Folks here at CT could recommend an auction house for a better price.
With this much wear, I wouldn't pay more than ~$150 or so for it. This exact coin last sold in March at a Solidus auction for 140 Eur (~$200 with buyer's premium and currency exchange) and personally that's too much in my eyes. You'd be better off saving up and waiting for a nicer one: due to recent hoards, these aren't particularly rare at the moment and therefore it's worth being patient.
Assuming you don't have a paid subscription to ACsearch, you might enjoy browsing CNG's sales archives to get an idea of the cost of various coins. It is also an easy place to search when you are wanting to know what something is worth. Using Sixbid or Numisbids to browse auction results is also fun and educational (the links I've used go to their Auction Results pages). With Sixbid you can further filter results by auction house. Don't forget to add Buyer's Premium to the results for auctioned coins, although Heritage shows the price including BP. If you are new to collecting ancients I suggest you stay away from eBay or that you only consider coins from eBay sellers who are recommended by other experienced collectors.
