Ancient Greek: Abdera, Thrace Tetrobol (who needs a head when you have that body?)

  1. Abdera, Thrace

AR Tetrobol. Circa 395-360 BC. Griffin springing left AB(D?) behind / three sprouting grains of corn EPI-PRW-TEW (greek characters translated)

    2.84g
    15.3mm

I think I may have a thing for coins with poor strikes

I think they made some interesting coins at Abdera. I have a similar coin with the Griffin missing if's forepart, but my reverse is completely different:
Thrace Abdera OBV_opt.jpg Thrace Abdera REv_opt.jpg
    THRACE, ABDERA Tetrobol
    OBVERSE: Griffin springing left
REVERSE: Magistrate's name around linear border, within which head of Hermes l., caduceus before; all in incuse square
    Struck at Abdera 411-385 BC
    2.780g, 15mm

  4. What is strange about mine, is that typically ABD follows the griffin in the right field on the obv. I understand the strike is off, but given the spacing between the A and B, you would think there would at least be a partial remnant of the D that is off the flan; or the spacing may not be as static as I would think. I'll have to look at more specimens
