I have this old ancient coin identified as a Cordian 111 AE Sestertius - 235-244 A.D. I know next to nothing of Ancient's. But this looks to be in pretty good shape. It appears to be pure copper about .250 thick with very strong strikes. Can you experts tell if it is real? Is it one to sell or keep. What would be a fair selling price?
I see nothing to suggest it is not genuine, but I'll leave that to some of my much more learned and experienced 'ancient coin buddies' to clarify. It's a sestertius with concordia seated and appears similar to one I have listed as a RIC 268....both in a similar grade of about Fine to Very Fine...a large bronze coin of Gordianus III as you indicated. Unless I'm missing something, I believe a fair value for the type and grade may range from about $40-$80.00 I'm sure many others will offer their opinions shortly... so be patient and the real ancient experts will be posting in only a matter of an hour or so......
Thanks for your response Mickey. You said you have one listed as a RIC 268. Have you ever sold coins on E-Bay? Would you start the bid at 0.99? Dave
I'm surprised no one else has responded to this thread yet.... I'd hesitate about the RIC 268 a bit, since a slight variation actually may place it in another #, but I suppose suggesting it may be that precise Roman Imperial Coin type would be ok (RIC).. I haven't listed on ebay as yet, but may sometime in the future. Listing at .99 cents appears to be recommended, but if you wish, I understand you can place a 'minimum reserve' ----usually meant to recover minimum expenses or limit purchase loss.....so perhaps setting one is best for you, but that's a personal decision.
