Hello all. I recently won a coin from Artemide Aste. With it came a very old tin container which I consider almost as intriguing as the coin itself. I always wish 'if only that coin could talk.' Well, the same goes with the container. Please post your coins that came with old tags, flips or containers.

Congratulations Gary. I love these coins. Yours, minted during the TRPOT XXXVII year of Tiberius, is much rarer than mine which was minted during TRPOT XXXIIX (subtractive). I love those old attribution tags and the container!

Very interesting. Here's probably my most interesting envelope I received with a coin.

    Interesting tin and tag!

This coin came with an old collection tag from Dr. Walter Stoecklin, who was an active collector in the early to mid 20th century. It is written in pen and ink -- not a ballpoint. You may read more about the Stoecklin collection here.

    Here is the collection tag:

    It reads:

    Rom Kaiserzeit
    Annia Galeria Faustina Mater
    Gemahlin d. Antoninus Pius
    geb 105, gest. 141
    AR denar
    Av. Buste r.
    DIVA FAVSTINA
    Rv. stehende Vesta
    AVGVSTA
    mit simpulum + Palladium

    Which is translated:

    Roman Empire
    Annia Galeria Faustina, mother
    wife of Antoninus Pius
    Born 105, died 141
    AR denarius
    Obv: Bust right
    DIVA FAVSTINA
    Rev: Vesta standing
    AVGVSTA
    with simpulum and Palladium

Note no references to catalog number, not even to Cohen. If you're interested, here are some: RIC 368; BMCRE 435-438; Cohen 108; RCV 4587; CRE 153.

In 1993, Numismatic Fine Arts auctioned a collection of 3500 coins divided into 352 lots. These lots, some individual coins and some large lots, realized between $39 and $800 so it is obvious that any rarities included were not popular or expensive. The lots were sold complete with the envelope and information tag of the collector who often included the envelope of the dealer from whom he had purchased the coin. The collection was formed in Germany between 1890 and 1930. In January, 1994, Victor Failmezger wrote an article on the collection for the Celator magazine (Vol. 8, No. 1, pp. 14f). He noted that the collector had made many of his envelopes and tags from scrap paper and card stock. Victor even reconstructed a business card from twelve pieces that had been used on the back side for tags. The coin below is shown with an envelope fashioned from scrap paper still bearing part of a German postage stamp. The tag is from a scrap of green cardboard. Whoever the collector, he chose to spend his limited funds on coins rather than supplies. The tag includes Cohen reference and acquisition date of February 20, 1920.

Siscia mint, 3rd officina, Cohen 142 (3 francs value)
It is interesting that the collector noted on his envelope the mintmark and field letter information. In fact, the contents of the collection suggested that he believed in collecting these issues by mintmark. Many of the coins from the Bavarian collection that I have seen were in better condition than this one. I believe the collector sought out the best specimen of each variety that he could find or afford but preferred to have an example that was less than perfect to having no coin at all. I bought a few from Victor but wish I had bought more with interesting envelopes even though the coins were not as great. One theory is that the collection was formed by a patient in a hospital with donated coins and no access to supplies. Does anyone else have any of these?

I also have a coin and tag from the Stoecklin collection.

Marcus Aurelius, 161-180. Denarius (Silver, 19 mm, 3.31 g, 6 h), Rome, 173. M ANTONINVS AVG TR P XXVII Laureate head of Marcus Aurelius to right. Rev. IMP VI COS III German captive seated left at foot of a trophy. Cohen 300. RIC 280. Well centered and attractively toned. Nearly extremely fine.
From the collection of W. F. Stoecklin, Amriswil, Switzerland, acquired prior to 1975.

The second oldest tag I have is this 46-year-old dealer tag, recording a purchase made in March, 1973:

Nice coin and good surfaces jamesicus. I'm trying to get all of Tiberius' sestertii. I'm almost there. Thanks.

I don't know exactly how old these tags for a coin from the Hildebrecht Hommel Collection are, but some other coins I have with the same provenance note acquisition dates between the 1940s and 1960s.
RR - L Censorinus Marsyas ex Hommel 3039 with tags.jpg

This Hadrian denarius came with an old handwritten tag, which again, I don't know the exact date of. It does however have an interesting provenance to the Cardinal Joachim Meisner collection. Cardinal Meisner, who was a close friend of Popes John Paul II and Benedict XVI, served as Archbishop of Cologne from 1989 to 2014. When he died in 2017 at the age of 83, his private collection of art and antiquities was sold to benefit the Cardinal Meisner Foundation in Cologne.

Here's another one from the same collection. The toning is more subtle, but I think you'll appreciate the coin. :)

I have a holder of sorts and original paperwork, etc. for a Severus Alexander denarius that was sold as a souvenir in Bath, England - c. 1940s-1960s?

Severus Alex den from Bath Apr 2018 (1).JPG

Severus Alex den from Bath Apr 2018 (11).JPG

Here is another Bath souvenir, not nearly as nice - a fourree Septimius Severus. I'm guessing the packaging is somewhat later than the first one - c. 1970s-1980s?:

Sept Severus - Fourree den Bath Eng June 2018 (1).JPG

Sept Severus - Fourree den Bath Eng June 2018 (0).jpg

These show up on eBay from time to time but bidders avoid them, probably suspecting museum replicas. As far as I can tell these are genuine ancients.
