geekpryde's Master Ancient Coin Dealer List updated 02.08.2020 As many of you know, I don't collect ancient coins. However, in my pursuit of online US Coin Dealers, I have come across quite a few ancient coin dealers, and I have started to compile them into this list. If you see a dealer that should be removed, or a dealer that is missing, please send me a PM or a reply and I will add/remove them. I hope this is helpful to someone, and not simply redundant to the other ancient coin dealer lists floating around. (The few I checked were very out-of-date). If a dealer's site simply points to vcoins or ebay, I have not listed them here. Aeternitas Coins and Antiquities Akropolis Ancient Coins AG & S Gillis Allen G. Don't forget MA-shops; they are usually cheaper than V-Coins. I'm guessing this isn't supposed to include the auction houses like Lanz and Gorny & Mosch...
Bargain Bin Ancients The name is accurate Museum Surplus Occasionally some interesting and reasonably priced items AU Capital Management A small but growing assortment of slabbed ancients, high grade, all "*"/"Ch"/"fine style" and/or uncommon coins. (@Zohar444 should check it out ) Frank S. Robinson He doesn't have a traditional webstore but his mail bid sales are quite popular. Great Collections Primarily a US coin site but they do usually have a dozen or two ancients-- the same never-selling handful relisted over and over and over since they are mostly unremarkable and overpriced. Still worth a regular inspection since occasionally something good is listed. When possible their coins are slabbed. The currently listed Yap stone is unslabbed Mine is slabbed
I have to wonder if there's a premium associated with the extra big CACA sticker? Nice list, greekpryde, thanks! I haven't visited some of those.
Like several auction houses, G&N has a mirror store on eBay and Vcoins so perhaps that's why geekpryde didn't list them and others. Civitas has a Vcoins store too though and it made the list. Because of the multiple selling venues for many ancient coin dealers, making a list which excludes individual Vcoins stores may be difficult. Maybe we should include dealers who maintain a stand-alone website even if it has the same for-sale content as their Vcoins and/or eBay stores.
Agreed. It pays to look everywhere. Sometimes a dealer has inventory listed on his/her site that isn't listed in their vcoins or eBay stores. And frequently the price of the inventory is lower on their sites. If I buy a coin from directly from FORVM, I'm going to pay around 15% less for it than I would if I bought it from their eBay store.
Thanks, added. You guys are the ancient experts, I'm just the data geek. If you say we should include auctions house I will gladly add them.
Wait... where did the "highly recommended" bit come from on Great Collections? I hope not from what I said. To rephrase, they have only a few ancients, usually low quality yet slabbed and overpriced. That's why the same coins appear cycle after cycle. No one wants them even at the opening bid price. Occasionally (ok, once) I found a true winner there. They're certainly a good seller in terms of mechanics but their ancient selection is lacking. I added them to the list just to be thorough.
They were already on my list, and already Highly Recommended by me, and I just flagged them as an ancient seller. (it carried over from the US side). I removed it.
Den of Antiquity - Added HJB - Should already have been on my list, I'm a dummy WCNCoinonline - Link? Lucernae - vcoin only You have a link? Ancient Trerasures - Is this replicas only? I found a few stores like this. You guys dont want to list replica-only outfits do you? (or is that okay in ancients, like cleaning?)
I'm not sure you need to remove GC, just list it with the caveat that they specialize in US coins and don't have much of a selection of ancients. Most of us detest the slabs, but a few don't.
I won't buy replicas. i WCN: http://stores.ebay.com/wcnconline?_rdc=1 Ancient Treasures: http://stores.ebay.com/ANCIENT-TREASURES?_rdc=1 lucernae: Ebay seller from Spain. No ebay store
Pegasi Numismatics & Spartan Numismatics - Their main site is down. http://www.pegasionline.com/ But they have other pages that work: http://www.pegasionline.com/catalogtext.asp? Strange. They should fix that if any of you know them. I added them anyway... Sphinx Numismatics (also at Vcoins) Do you have the link? I only find them on vcoins.
