I saw others give "tips" for coins, I thought I would give one to anyone wanting cheaper coin books. http://www.ebay.com/itm/4-COINS-Boo...aultDomain_0&hash=item2ec52ab133#ht_367wt_917 It has the two current versions of Sear's "Greek coins and their values", along with two older versions of his "Roman coins and their values", (I believe early 80's and late 70's versions. Still, as a base for starting out, it would be a nice little lot for someone for around $50 or so. Current bid is around $13. Like all price guides, the prices are really meaningless except in a relative sense. If you see coins that he lists for 10 pounds usually go for about $20 nowadays, it could be inferred a coin listed at 50 pounds might be valued AROUND $100. It gives you relative rarity and desirability ratings in other words. Chris
http://www.ebay.com/itm/ROMAN-COINS...aultDomain_0&hash=item257973e859#ht_348wt_917 Here is a BIN for $55 on Sear's Vol I of the new 5 volume Roman Coins and their values series. This one is invaluable for Roman republican and 12 Caesar's collectors, (hint hint). Btw mods, these are not my auctions, nor do I know the sellers, so I hope its ok to post these for others benefit here.
One thing I've found is that for hard to get books, Amazon.co.uk sometimes has deals that aren't on the US Amazon site. For instance, Roman Republican Moneyers and Their Coins 63 BC to 49 BC starts at £40 there, while the cheapest copy on the US site is $200. That particular book is pretty fantastic as well for understanding the meaning and purpose of the imagery on coins of that period and who issued them. I highly recommend it to anyone at all interested in that subject.
