Here is another I have looked for for the right price:

    christopher.jpg

I just won it a few hours ago, so seller's pic of course. Its Constantine VII, with Romanus and Christopher. Being a Christopher myself, I have always wanted this coin since I first found out of its existence. There are only scarce solidi and a VERY scarce silver issue naming Christopher. I have never seen a silver for sale personally. Christopher was a son of Romanus that he was trying to succeed to the throne. He was not in the succession line for long, though, which is why any coins naming his are truly scarce.

Anyway, I am pretty jazzed about it. Between this and my Trajan rhino dichalkoi its been a good couple of months, even though the Vahran II I bought ended up being a fake. :(

It's clearly a fake. The devices are all wrong. Probably plated lead.

I really need to get me some ancient gold. I really feel like I am on the back burner on these. Great pick up Chris. What ancient collector doesn't want a coin with there name on it, many coins call to you, but only a few scream. Great Pick up. I did not know your Vahran II turned out to be fake? What was the indication? maybe I should find the thread and re read it.

I was told it was a known fake listed in Sellwood. So I checked Sellwood Sassanid and sure enough there it was. It was also on a fake listing online.

Oh well. I probably wouldn't have bought it if there was a clear pic, but it was worth a shot. Its on its way back to the seller as SNAD. This coin was bought from a pretty reputable firm, so I think I am alright with it JA. :)

BTW, yeah, AN, why DON'T you own some ancient gold? Being a Central Asian collector, you should look at Kushan, Kidarite, or similar. Kidarites are interesting since they are the only Huns who struck in all three metals. Heck, their gold coins might be more numerous than their silver or copper actually.

Never a bad thing to add gold to a collection. Still trying to get more into byzantine but its proving slow, lol.

Glad you got a coin you needed Chris. Just dont go throwing it in a box with hundreds of others and not enjoying it again ;)

Its a real shame to here about the Sasanian coin. It was a magnificent "looking" piece. Admittedly these coins are often recovered in high grade with good silver, and I really don't think I can pick out fakes from let say, the vast amount of imitative coinage and those of incidental kings.

As far as kidarite gold pieces, I was looking at a really nice 8 gram 14k gold stater for really not a lot of money. I have been meaning to add one to my collection, but in the last month or so, I have been putting a lot of pressure on the paypal account, so maybe in the not to distant future. Problem is though if I get Kidarite gold then I will need Kushan Gold. If I get Kushan gold then I will need Persian gold and even if I come up with the cash for that I will still not be happy because I would then need Roman gold to complement it. If I indeed end up getting all these gold pieces. I will then need to find a new wife and a new (not as nice) place to live. So right now -its baby steps. I have a tendency to "snow-ball" my collection. Thats why I have all kinds of coins from all parts of the world - across all times.

Btw, there appears to have been a hoard of Constantine VII found. I am seeing more of these around in the last month than cumulatively in the last two years. If a "christopher" is a coin you have ever wanted, might think about getting one now.

I am thinking about buying a second because, you know, two are better than one.
