Hello everyone. For my first post I want to discuss ANACS slabs. As most of us know ANACS is one of the top 3 grading services, and they are known for a veteranship in third party grading. I loved how their old slabs look, they have a proffessional style and seem to challenge PCGS and NGC's slabs. Though I want to know your thoughts on ANAC's modern slabs In my opinion these slabs are plain ugly. The curve at the top is something unique, but also makes the slabs look strange. The thing I dislike most however is the color. PCGS has a nice blue tint, and NGC most of the time has a tinted background with (non-distracting) artwork in the background. However ANACS has an unproffessional looking yellow, that definitely doesn't go well with the font. I think this is part of why an ANACS submission is much cheaper than say an NGC or PCGS sub; it also gives reason as to why coins in anacs slabs don't go for as much as the same coin in PCGS or NGC slabs. Thoughts? Should ANACS go back to their old slabs or am I just too picky? Any comments would be appreciated.
I find moisture gets trapped in the yellow ANACS slabs in a few of mine and you can see it inside the inner ring. They also don't have the prong holder, unlike NGC and PCGS, that show at least part of the rim. I don't really like them.
I prefer the yellow over the older blue, but I would like something else even more. I like the curved top for ease of finding what I'm looking for, but I agree, it's odd looking. I don't think it's moisture, I think it's the silicone(?) ring sticking to the slab that makes it look like moisture. I can see the edges of my ANACS slabbed coins just fine, and in some cases, better then in the other TPG holders. The slabs interlock very well with other (newer) ANACS slabs, but they do not play well with other TPG's slabs. Like the NGC slabs, they don't fit in all the slab boxes very well. Sounds like I;m a fan-boy of the ANACS slab, but I'm not. I'd give it a 5 out of 10. I do not think the slab itself has any bearing (or much) on why they're cheaper, or rated #3 of the top 4. I think that is only about their reputation/public opinion of their grading and resale perception. I personally think the old small white slabs are the best, kind of like the old NGC Fattys, or PCGS OGH's and Doilies.
The old soap bars are the best. The blue ones tend to he overgraded from what i have seen. The yellow ones.... well come on. Keep the slab, keep the grading standards but please get rid of the mustard yellow lables
The bile yellow is beyond Fugly. I don’t like the curved top either. I don’t like the blue much better. The old ones are nice but don’t fit as well in a modern slab box. And you can’t send an anacs coin to cac. So most I buy get crossed or cracked
The ANACS holders have a worldwide patent on ugly. I have a couple of coins in the old soap slabs and independent eyes have told me the grades are rock solid.
I don't know why they picked the yellow. Not a good decision and even worse is why do they stick with it?
I must say I don't care about the color of the insert, but I would like to see them go back to the old white slab. They should consider doing a retro but with a larger frame.
I like the old soap bars ANACS holders. I don't like anything about their latest two generations of holders.
I think nothing of cracking coins out of the yellow holders. I must say that I never cracked out a NGC or PCGS graded coin.
I would say ANACS has some good points too.... They have more complete data on coin/ PGGS/ NGC do not have enough descriptive info about coin in holder. Also, they grade more conservative, an ANACS MS-60 looks as good as a PGGS/ NGC MS-62 Same as old PGGS green/blue holders are better quality grades. But the Canadian firm CCCS has best looking holder/ best grading standards. I had a previously graded MS-65 (NGC) get a MS-62. This form grades along European standards. However they also come short on providing enough data. John
Completely disagree. You are certainly entitled to your opinion though, but them being to conservative is not why they sell for less and on high end coins a lot less Thats really not true at all.
Funny story, the first time i saw the newer yellow insert it was at a coin shop, the coin in the slab was a details coin and the dealer had it in the case next to an older blue insert straight graded coin. For a little while after that i thought yellow was the color they used for details coins to set them apart.
This proves nothing other than you being able to post an anecdotal example wherein based only on photos you claim that one coin is higher quality than another.
Definately should have used different colour I would have used You can find them both on Heritage site, i have the John I coin in my coll. I have also noted how many raw graded CNG coins from Adams Coll. graded as CH-EF ended up slabbed at later auction by NGC as MS-65.... I have over 800 gold coins/ most European raw graded coins are superior to TPG firms. I have 3 ANACS/ 200 NGC/ 120 PGGS, the three from ANACS are stricter graded. John ALL TPG firms do a mediocre job with hammered coins.
