    Hey..
My coins came back from ANACS today...here are the grades.

    1962 Half PF64CAMEO!!!!!!

1906 IHC...NET AU50 cleaned...I've been reading up on this and I think it has been dipped.

1892P Half NetF12 Corroded...I sure don't see what they see but I'm going to take their word until I can prove the other way!

1938-D Half F-15!!!!!--I thought it would only grade VG...so I'm not sure I'll take the grade...I'll look at it again to see if it has been over graded.

All in all this has been a great learning for me...I mgiht have lost a few dollars on the IHC but I helped me learn how to tell if I coin has been dipped or not!!!

My dad had a coin come back Cleaned..you might remember it..a 1878 VAM4 Morgan dollar in BU...I don't see any sign of it and think I'll take it into the dealer and see if he can help me find it!!!

Congratulations ! Sounds like you had fun and learned a lot (wish I knew even a tenth what you know).

When you have a coin that is spot-cleaned (as opposed to dipped), can you typically see it with your 5X-10X magnifier, or does it usually take something stronger ?

When I see a coin that has been cleaned at all I can most of the time see if with out a 5x...the coin has lost all luster and is shiny and looks funny---now if a coin has been dipped (If I get this wrong one of the older guys will tell me) it will look dull and not have any luster even though it has a lot of detail....on Unc coins...that is what got me...the coin wasn't shiny...it had grade detail and looked MS63+...but it had been dipped.

I'll tell you something...I know next to nothing...and what I do know has come from books...and the guys on this forum...I have been on a few forums but none like this one.

Guess I was thinking primarily about your 1878 Morgan where you want a dealer to help you find the cleaning. I’m picturing a very small area where someone Q-tipped (or even toothpicked) a small spot.

You know...I'm not 100% sure that they are right...Grading Co. mess up every now and then and I have looked and looked and still don't see it....I'm 55% sure it hasn't been dipped...it still has luster.

We will see what my dealer says.

Speedy, How long was your wait, to get your coins back from ANACS? I sent some Franklins in about 3 months ago.

It was almost 4 months to the day--the lady was nice and said they had been there longer then they should have and also gave me a tracking number that didn't work because my post office didn't put it into the computer so I couldn't track it that good!!!

If I were you I would call the 1-800 number and ask when you should be getting them...

Don't forget Speedy - you can dip a coin and not remove all the luster. It is when a coin is over-dipped, or dipped multiple times that the luster can completely disappear. There are many, many, many dipped coins out there in ALL of the TPG slabs. Consider Morgan dollars - it is conservatively estimated that 80 - 85% of ALL Morgan dollars have been dipped at one time or another. How many of them do you see slabbed ?

So does it depend on the amount of luster that is removed or just depend on how the grader feels that day?
If a grading co. slabs some and doesn't others how do they decide..."flip a coin"?
What would be a good thing to look for to find the kind of dipping that doesn't remover much luster?
Is dipping hard to tell when there still is some luster?

Sorry for all the questions at once...I'm still looking for sites to read too...

    BTW
When this one came back at the same time another Morgan came back MS65!...

Well - I hate to say it but it just might depend on how the grader feels that day. It is a subjective call - there are no hard and fast rules. Bottom line is - if they feel the coin has been over-dipped they will label it cleaned.

Recognizing a dipped coin is something that just comes with experience. It's kind of hard to explain - but easy to show someone when you have coins in your hand and can compare them.

An over-dipped coin on the other hand is easy to recognize. They will appear a dull washed out grey or silver color if the coin is silver. If it's copper - it will appear lifeless & flat - the light won't play around the coin in either case.

And keep in mind - many of the greatest numismatists and dealers will dip a coin in a heartbeat. They see nothing wrong with it at all. And if it is done properly - it can be quite beneficial to them monetarily. Say you have coin with original surfaces ( never been dipped ) but the coin is toned - the greyish toning that all silver gets over time. You send the coin in for grading to NGC or PCGS and it comes back MS64. Now you crack that coin out and dip it - correctly. And what appears before your eyes is a coin with blazing luster and is blast white. You send the same coin in again for grading. Only this time it comes back MS67.

Puts a few more coins in your pocket wouldn't ya say ?

One thing you cal always consider though - if you're looking at a coin that is say over 50 yrs old - and it's blast white. The odds are very, very strong that the coin has been dipped. Silver WILL tone and turn grey with time. It is simply inevitable unless the coin stored under perfect conditions for its entire life. And while that is possible - it just doesn't happen very often.

I received about a dozen circulated Morgan dollars from my grandfather quite a long time ago. I was telling a local coin dealer about them recently and the first words out of his mouth were, 'You should dip them.' I wouldn't do that, but now I know why all of the Morgans in his shop are white, and I'll probably never buy one. I guess the practice is very widespread.

Speedy...how did you feel when ANACS charged your credit card (or deposited your check) immediately upon receipt?

I don't mind paying for services rendered, but 4 months is ridiculous to hold your money. That is one of my beefs with the TPG's. Credit cards are charged upon receipt...YOUR money is now used by them for a 1/3 of the year and finally you get your coins back. All in all, they should charge your credit card when services are rendered, not 4 months before. [IMG]

Sure, I have heard recommendations to splurge for the faster services, but money held over 60 days by any business cost "money". If business is soooooooooo good, then the good TPG's need to get their act together and invest in business improvements. Expansion for a successful business is essential. Otherwise, if you take advantage of customers and provide poor service, that is a formula for going out of business.

Thanks GD--the light still plays on the coin some but not like it does on other coins...I guess maybe it was only dipped a little or something...

I'll try to remember to start looking for coins that have been dipped so I'll be able to tell better...

The Morgan that came back 65 was one that had stayed in a roll for years...and before that it was in a mint bag...I can't say if it hasn't been dipped but the toning is pretty around the rim!!!

I try to send Money Order with things like that as I don't use Creadit Cards (all they do is put most people in debt)...

I don't mind too much that it took 3 (almost 4) months...the coins are worth it to me.

If I send in more they will be on the faster service.
