Hello All, Helping a family member catalog their collection, and came across these. I saw something where the mint put together 10k of these just for the convention, and some 5k were melted sometime after. I thought they were neat. Thoughts?
IMO it's cool packaging. The problem is, those coins were minted in the hundreds of millions. The only difference with those is how they're presented. The token might have some collector interest.
I have one of those sets. I bought it at the 1976 ANA show which was held in New York City. I was lucky enough to get Mary Brooks to sign my envelope. I have no idea what it might be worth.
If they are S minted, they are silver. Which would make them even more collectable. Either way the set is very nice.
Link to what I read about the destruction of half the sets. https://forums.collectors.com/discussion/1004264/the-fate-of-1976-ana-special-coin-sets Even though the coins themselves may not be rare, the fact that they were packaged by the mint and almost half were destroyed means there's only 5k of these sets left.
I have this set and a few others that the ANA put out. My 1976 is also signed, but the envelope corners are no where near as sharp as John's. My thoughts said, these sets carry a small premium when they appear.
