Hi guys, BNB here. I know I posted a few threads lately on some coins but I want to let everyone know that I canceled the $2,000+ order for the bullion, morgan, peace, and 10 silver eagles.. I felt like I was getting kinda ripped off and didn't feel like any of those coins will do me good in the long term. Now, this is what I do plan to get. Kinda starting over here.. 1913-D TYPE 2 FULL STRIKE! SELECT UNC BUFFALO NICKEL http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=380148406220#ht_1974wt_1165 1937 D 3 LEGGED BUFFALO NICKEL XF 45 NGC WOW http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300339154122&ssPageName=ADME:B:BCA:US:1123 2009 ABRAHAM LINCOLN PROOF COMMEMORATIVE DOLLAR http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=320410906057&ssPageName=ADME:B:EOIBSA:US:1123 Now please, I ask all of you.. not to tell me to read books(because i am already doing so) but if you will, just give me some recommendations of what I should buy if I have about $2000 to spend on coins.. Please, I really just want to get some nice coins that have future value and I don't want to make this very complicated. If you don't know what to recommend me, just don't say it. I am looking for some direct responses. If you have links that would be great to. Thanks everyone.
Well that first coin looks cleaned. Stay far away from that auction. I would buy some higher quality coins with nice luster instead of circulated buffaloes. Try some slabbed high grade mercury dimes or morgans if you have that much to spend.
Ok, I will be sure to not bid on that one any higher. I appreciate your second piece of advice, but not sure what you mean by nice luster. For the high grade mercury dimes or morgans, do you have any links on which you think are good?
I think it's good you backed out of that order, especially if you wanted to reorder today at a better price for some of the things you were overpaying for or which you could have bought a greater quantity of at a better price break. "I really just want to get some nice coins that have future value" ...Sorry, but this seems to be what complicates matters for you in the forum. Opening up such a forum for suggestions, hands down, you are going to get loads of ideas from conflicting perspectives if you ask such open ended inquiries as well as asking for which coins will have future value. Who can tell? Probably none of us, but everyone has good thoughts on the matter. Keep reading as you are doing, take suggestions, weigh them and make up your own mind based on what you like to collect or decided to buy as an investment.
Not on the major TPG slabs (PCGS, NGC). Is there a particular coin series you're interested in collecting?
Can they - yes. However, I doubt that they can do it without it being noticeable to anyone who looks closely. On the other hand, they can do a good job making a completely new slab that is very hard to detect.
Yes, I wouldn't mind owning a nice peace dollar, nice morgan dollar, and a 3 legged 1937 d buffalo nickel if the price is right. How bout this., For over $2,000, I want the 100oz silver bar when price gets a little lower, and a nice peace dollar, morgan, and a 1937d buff nickel. What do you guys think you could set me up with in terms of pointing me in the right direction?
Man, BNB, I'd sure wish you'd hold on to your cash until your knowledge catches up with you. I'd spend a little more on one coin rather than many of lesser value. I think a key date Lincoln cent would be something that a lot of current and future collectors will want should you sell. I'd also recommend getting something that is in a higher grade for eye appeal. Personally, I'd look at this piece: http://www.coinraritiesonline.com/index.php?page=search&task=det_pl&offset=27&gal_id=1 Of course, you could easily fall in love with the coin and decide never to sell it. On the other hand, I could see it appreciating in the long term and should be relatively easy to sell. All of that said, I still am not a believer in buying coins strictly for investment purposes but you've already heard that lecture. Good Luck!
This is what I should have said. Technically it is possible, but if you inspect the slab I'm sure there would be some strong signs of tampering. I'm going to have to agree with what Krispy said. I would really suggest getting a little more familiar with coins before you invest in them. But if you really want to just buy some coins right away for an investment, your best bet would probably be certified semi-key or key date coins.
If I was planning on one day becoming a dealer, how does one buy at wholesale prices? Just a little side question I had.
Thoughts on this- 2009 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle Gold Coin (UH1) http://catalog.usmint.gov/webapp/wc...10001&storeId=10001&productId=14708&langId=-1 a nice looking 1937-d buffalo nickel and 100oz silver bullion.. Think that might be a good longterm investment hold?
Last I checked, the prices of precious metals were pretty high, so I would wait until they come down a bit if you really want to profit in the long run from them, but that could take a couple of years. I know you don't like to hear this, but unless you're filthy rich, you really shouldn't just dump $2,000 into an investment you don't understand. Coins are tricky, and it's really, really hard to predict what will be profitable and what won't. Honestly, if you want to be reasonably sure to make money, stick to more traditional and predictable investments (and make sure you understand them as well!). Collectibles are really hard to profit on consistently.
All of that would put you over 3,000 dollars. The UHR is a awesome coin and I would love to have one but, IMO I don't think it's the greatest investment unless you're willing to hold on to it for awhile. Here's why; The production is over 60,000 now and still being produced, plus the limit has just been changed from 1 to 10 per household.
Oh come on man.. Referring to your 2nd paragraph, I kinda asked not to get this kinda advice in this thread. I am a currency trader. I've traded stocks/futures/currencies for 5 years +. I understand the power and leverage of trading. Maybe you don't get what I'm getting at man. I just have 2k to drop and want to put it into coins and bullion. I'm sure there is stuff out there, I just don't know and I already tried to get stuff but the collectors diddn't really think it was a good idea(the morgan and peace i mentioned a few threads ago) That's why I just want a few quick suggestions from people. I am not changing my mind and going elsewhere with my investments, please understand that ok man? Thanks
BNB I hope you didn't buy any of those, at your level you should only get PCGS graded coins and with the money you have can buy one great coin if you are patient or maybe even many if the mint helps us out this year. If you want something older then concentrate on maybe gold. if you want something new then maybe concentrate on platinum or gold. Here is a coin I think will do well over twenty years but was released last year, I own some of these myself. http://cgi.ebay.com/2008-W-PLATINUM...lion?hash=item2ea71d396a&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14 It is only a 1/10 ounce but they only made 5650 of them in that size and is the lowest mintage coin for that series. Here is the same coin graded perfect. http://cgi.ebay.com/2008-W-Platinum...lion?hash=item414827895c&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14 The coin is only the size of a dime so isn't that large. The next size one is the 1/4 ounce, here is that one. http://cgi.ebay.com/2008-W-25-Plati...lion?hash=item19b5b67ee8&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14 They only made 3891 of that coin. I think the platinum proof 2008 W coins are good investments due to the mintages. However I have to say nothing is guaranteed. If platinum prices dropped that may affect their value, also they are not the most popular coins.
BNB: Are you serious? You should then understand this conversation and the advice better given your career background. Reverse the situation, if people here were asking you novice questions about currency trading and just want to get in and make some easy dough, it's not just that easy and you're not that likely to expose what works best for you out of protecting you ability to make great transactions. A lot of people are advising you very well here, but you don't seem to get it. You need to understand that what is being offered is sound advice and people are telling you to do a little homework instead of sticking your neck out there and getting ripped off. You've got to understand that warning. Please take some time to get to know this hobby/field/industry if this is where you're seriously hoping to invest or collect or whatever your hopes are. :thumb:
