Hello. My friend was wondering what this particular coin that he had was; It'd be a bit easier to identify for you if I were at my own home, and could scan it for you. It looks to have some sort of arabic writing on the front and back- but I'm not an expert. One side has a face of a ruler, and the other has a detailed crest which includes a star (similar to a pentacal star), with a horizon behind it. There is a crown on the top of it. On the outside of the crest is two lions, one which is looking towards the crown, and one towards the veiwer.(Both's paws are extended towards the crown.) There is a banner stretching across the bottom with more writing that I can't decipher. There are two dates on it- 1965 and 1384. There is a ring that goes around the outside which looks like a continuous rope, and for some reason on the left and rights of the crest, there are these strange raised little spot like things. We just want to identify the country it's from; maybe you all can help us? We've tried to go through google, and haven't been able to. - We're both students, so we don't have access to find to many other coins, unfortunately. I apologize if this isn't the right spot for it, but I didn't know if it fit anywhere else in the forum. Thank you for your time.
Welcome to CoinTalk. You'll have better luck if you post your question with photos under World & Ancient Coins. Good luck.
That double date, in the Western and Islamic calendars, conclusively establishs that your coin is from a Muslim country. There are many forum members who could quickly identify your coin from a picture, but only a specialist could hope to pinpoint it from only your description. If you are absolutely unable to post a picture I suggest that you go here, scroll down to "Arabic Numbers and Numerals" and find the numeric denomination. Post that, with the size and metallic content, and someone with more patience than I might successfully search the many Islamic country entries in the 20th Century volume of the Standard Catalog of World Coins for you. (I couldn't find a match in Morocco, which was my first guess.) Good luck.
Does your coin have the double dates at the top and a number one or five below the crest and the lions? If so, it's likely from Morocco. The bust on the obverse of the coin would be al-Hassan II 1962 - 1990. Lou
