Found in circulation, I've never seen one like this before. Both sides are shiny and appear iridescent (like the colors in an oil spill). Any idea what's up with this?
Based on the area by Liberty on the obverse I am going to guess that the coin came into contact with some reactive foreign object which caused it to tone dramatically. I get a lot of them in change/rolls. Most of them feel dirty, because they are. I don't save them. Some of them still have whatever nasty stuff was on there still on it, and it will leave you hands shiny or sticky. Ocasionally you will find one that toned without being in contact with something else..those I put aside even though I am not a toning fan...somebody out there must want them somewhere, some day.
Not close enough is right and the tone is from an oil or solvent. Not close enough is right and the tone is from an oil or solvent. We find them toned like this from time to time and they are often very pretty and nice. I have always suspected hand/face oil or some other oil or solvent. There are so many things it could be that there will never be 100% correct answer. They just sometimes look like this is all.
