Set Category: Toned Coins Collectors' Society Owner: lehigh96 Set Theme: Great Falls vs. Battle Creek (The pedigreed collections face off in a game of basketball) Set Description: I have created this collection in an attempt to determine which pedigree actually has the best rainbow toned Morgan Dollars. I love rainbow toned coins and sports, so I came up with a way to incorporate both. The rules for the game are as follows: 1. Each pedigree must field a six coin basketball team (5 players & a coach). 2. Guards: Each team must have two obverse toned coins grading either MS63 or MS64. 3. Forwards: Each team must have two reverse toned coins grading either MS63 or MS64. 4. Center: Each team must have a gem coin as their center (MS65+) and the coin can be either obverse or reverse toned. 5. Coach: Each team must have an obverse toned gem as their coach. 6. Salary Cap: Each team must not spend more than $5300 on their team. The purpose of the salary cap is to even the playing field. The Battle Creek collection has hundreds of available coins, whereas the Great Falls collection is under 100. Without the salary cap, the Battle Creek collection would have an insurmountable advantage. With the salary cap in place, the playing field is leveled and we can see which collection boasts the best rainbow toned coins with respect to value. The Great Falls collection used 87% of the salary cap and the Battle Creek collection used 100% of the salary cap. Each coin will be displayed with photos and a detailed description of the coin. My hope is that everyone who views this collection will enjoy looking at it as much as I have building it. Maybe it will inspire another collector to field his/her own team of Battle Creeks. Maybe some of the Binion collectors will field a team. Anyway, let the rainbow wars begin. Great Falls Basketball Team Photo Battle Creek Basketball Team Photo Great Falls Coin Descriptions GREAT FALLS POINT GUARD: 1881-S NGC MS64* A gorgeous coin with superb luster and a striking obverse rainbow of powder blue, lemon yellow, cherry red, and emerald green. (Images Courtesy of ARC) GREAT FALLS SHOOTING GUARD: 1881-S NGC MS64* A powerful conglomeration of powder blue, yellow, orange and magenta are presented on the obverse of this coin of uncompromising originality. However, what really makes this coin special is the unbelievable luster. This coin gives the great falls team a formidable back court to be sure. (Images Courtesy of ARC) GREAT FALLS SMALL FORWARD: 1885-O NGC MS64* A very pleasing reverse toner. A beautiful mixture of greens, blues, and orange, with touches of magenta and violet mixed in. At only 6% of the salary cap, this rookie small forward has definitely got some talent. (Images Courtesy of ARC) GREAT FALLS POWER FORWARD: 1881-S NGC MS64* A spectacular end of roll reverse toner fills the power forward slot boasting a kaleidoscope of colors. The coin has beautiful rings of red, yellow, and blue on the peripheries. The interior shows gorgeous violet and the eagle is vividly toned in emerald green with the appearance of blazing magenta on the birds back. It gives you the impression that this guy is flying through the air on fire, straight to the hole for a slam dunk. It should be noted that the obverse of this coin does not deserve an MS64 grade, but I guess the graders never turned the coin over. Who could blame them. Regardless, this offensive power house may give up a little on "D" but is still an integral part of the team. (Images Courtesy of ARC) GREAT FALLS CENTER: 1881-S NGC MS67 This superb gem is a dream for the collector of original toning. This big man in the middle has semi-prooflike fields and a deeply toned obverse that hypnotizes the viewer with a blend of greens, blues, and purples. At 31% of the salary cap, this coin is a force to be reckoned with in the middle. (Personal Images) GREAT FALLS COACH: 1885-O NGC MS65 This rookie coach is big on personality and enthusiasm and small on salary. A clean cheek and dynamite intermingled obverse toning. (Personal Images) Battle Creek Coin Descriptions BATTLE CREEK POINT GUARD: 1885 NGC MS64* A light bright crescent of magenta, gold, turquoise, orange, and violet frame miss liberty's untoned face in a most attractive way. This coin does not strike you immediately, but the more you stare at it, the more you come to appreciate its beauty. Just like a solid fundamentally sound point guard should be. (Personal Images) BATTLE CREEK SHOOTING GUARD: 1886 NGC MS64* This coin is simply phenomenal and words and photos don't really do it justice. Deep violet blankets the right half of the obverse leaving an incredible band of the most vivid emerald green covering most of miss liberty's face. Her nose, forehead and, hair show a pretty band of orange/yellow that gives the impression that the sun is shining on liberty's face. And last but not least, the bright pink eye that led me to name this coin the PINK EYE DOLLAR. This coin is undoubtedly the Michael Jordan of the collection, and the Great Falls team had better hope that the game is not tied with seconds left, because this baby will definitely hit the game winning shot. A one of a kind original beauty that was a pure steal at only 11.6% of the salary cap. (Images Courtesy of ARC) BATTLE CREEK SMALL FORWARD: 1885 NGC MS64* A wonderfully toned Morgan fills the 3 spot in the Battle Creek line up. The reverse displays attractive bands of gold, violet, sky blue, sea foam green, orange, magenta, and finally some emerald green at the left. The obverse is brilliant but is a little baggy for the assigned grade. (Personal Images) BATTLE CREEK POWER FORWARD: 1886 NGC MS64* This powerfully reverse toned coin is a quintessential example of the battle creek collection. Strong emerald green dominates with some magenta, orange, blue and yellow filling the rest. A stong performer at 22% of the cap gives the Battle Creek team a boost at power forward. (Personal Images) BATTLE CREEK CENTER: 1886 NGC MS65* A unique conglomeration of orange, magenta, royal blue, emerald green, teal, and violet blanket the obverse in a most attractive way. The reverse also displays a beautiful rainbow crescent. A strong center with all the skills. (Personal Images) BATTLE CREEK COACH: 1885 NGC MS65* An incredibly toned gem and a retired center takes the lead as the coach of this formidable team. The obverse displays amazing bands of emerald green, royal blue, magenta, gold, mint, sky blue, violet, and yellow. The reverse is sharp and brilliant. (Personal Images) I have added a poll to this thread as well. I would like to know if anyone thinks this signature set should win an award? As always, comments and opinions welcome.
Haha, man, very sweet idea, I'll have to do this with some Lincolns. :thumb: Very nice! :thumb: Phoenix
