Lately a lot of people have been discussing investing here on CT and some of the threads have gotten a bit "heated" to say the least, so I thought that we could all just blow off a little steam and maybe everyone learn something at the same time. I hoped that we could have a little competition amongst ourselves with nothing on the line but pride and knowledge and in that respect we can all win.

On Dec. 1st, I will start a new thread in which everyone will post according to the following scenario:

you have $10,000 US and you can buy any coin or coins with that 10K in any combination. Prices will be taken from the PCGS price guide. These coins can be bullion, collector coins, or any other combination of coins provided that they are listed in the price guide.

Your entries must be posted by December 2nd at midnight EST.

You must post your entry to the thread and no editing of posts will be allowed (so get it right the first time). Any editing of a post will be cause for that post's disqualification.

The coin or coins in your portfolio may not be changed throughout the year. You get this one-time purchase and we'll see who has the most $ worth next year on Dec. 1.

anyone interested?? You have a couple of weeks to prepare.

    let's get ready to rummmmmbleeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!

Sure, I'll be the first to bite. Even though we've had our back and forths, I'd love to participate. Since I have what I feel to be a strong investing background, it's time to dominate! ;)

Nobody beats BNB at his own game.

Sounds interesting to me, I'm in. One question though, is the PCGS price guide going to cover all the coins/bullion? For instance, I don't think PCGS guides cover raw coins/bullion, so how would those be counted. Also how often are the PCGS guides updated?

Excellent question. What we'll do is this: We'll look at price for bullion coins at kitco. We'll use bid and whichever is higher for a coin (PCGS or kitco) we'll use that number.

Also at the end of the year if the coin value becomes more than the bullion value, then we'll use the higher value of the two.

Sounds good! Now I'll just have to go find my thinking cap, and see what I should buy.

Btw Mike should I pm you my address, where you can send the check for $10,000? I'll take MO, or paypal too if that's more convenient.:goofer:

Judging from the way BNB buys coins ... it will be like taking candy from a baby.

My prediction is that the real competition will come from seasoned collectors and coin dealers who have the knowledge base and experience to make well thought out and informed decisions.. not any ole newbies who happens to have more money than sense.

Not that I'm a moderator. But can we please refrain from singling out any single person. You guys know you're pushing the thin line. This an awesome thread idea, we don't need to creep in with drama.
RSVP me a spot, I'll start thinking. It doesn't need to be American, Right?

Agreed, this is not going to be allowed to be personal. This is a terrific idea for a competition, but if it becomes personal or nasty then those posts will be removed/penalized.

    You have all been warned.

Agreed. I'm all for it and I know exactly who to report if those personal posts come in attacking character..

I have to repeat cave troll that this a is fun and learning!!! Not personal!!! No one should be singled out, aimed at, or ridiculed. Talk with your entries. Show what you know rather than talking so much about it!!

For the love of Pete! Don't tell me what you're going to do, just do something and let everyone judge it on merit!

Sounds fun! Though I won't proclaim I'll beat anyone...at least as far as coins go, as I don't invest in coins. Now, if we're talking stock in a future contest, thats another ballgame :D

    I'm in.

question: US coins only (is what the OP said)...can it be ANY US coin? Like errors and such? and...can it be a coin WE own, a particular one?

Also, how are we going to determine value?

the reason why I'm asking is because if I say MS-66 Barber Quarter (for example), ones MS-66 could be a dog, while another could be an attractive PQ example which would sell for more than the dog, and another could be a nicely toned example which would demand a premium.

It sounds like they are going to use the PCGS price guide. So, I assume that any coin listed in the guide will be fair game. That's how I'm planning on preparing anyway.
