The post man delivered a coin that I've been waiting a little over a month for today, and I'm excited to finally be able to share it. This is a post-semilibral(Crawford 41) uncia, not a terribly rare coin but an interesting single-denomination single-die variety with a pair of dolphins at the keel instead of the line pattern, waves or empty space that are normally seen on the keel of the galley on the reverse of these types. Except for the dolphins, the style and details of this type are entirely consistent with other unciae of the series so it doesn't seem that this type was minted at another mint or anything like that and I think it was probably just a little stylistic flourish added by the engraver. Roman republic Æ Uncia(7.81g, 22mm, 3h), anonymous "post-semilibral" series. 215-212 BC. Head of Roma right, wearing attic helmet; to left, • / Prow right; above, ROMA; below, •. Crawford 41/10; McCabe Group A1(Cf. A1.un.1, these dies) Ex Thersites Collection Please share any similar interesting varieties you may have! Dolphins work too!
What a great find! Fantastic. I really like the Dolphins. Usually the Unciae are pretty "bland", but that feature is pretty cool. I have these Unciae from this approx time period (only a couple years difference!) Yeah, during that NASTY Hannibal War period! This may need to be dipped in @YOC 's or @Pishpash doo-dah sauce! Very nice coin red_spork, and added bonus of dolphins on keel, they are a nice coin for a lower denomination I have the Uncia a few years earlier, the main difference is Roma looking left. AE Uncia 217-215 BC, 24mm, 11.8gm, Crawford 38/6.
Fantastic variety! I hate to say it but wit some of the results I've seen here...I think that might be a good idea. Of course only if they thought it was wise and agreed.
@red_spork incredible coin. Over the last 18 months I've seen you go from a modest collection of RR coins to the expert on RR coins in this forum. Incredible, man. Next time I'm in the market for obscure issues from that period I'll shoot you a PM.
Thanks, Sallent. I dunno if I'm quite an expert just yet but I certainly don't mind helping fellow cointalkers find cool coins.
Wow, red_spork => that's an OP-stunner!! (congrats) I have a bunch of AE RR coins, but I don't think I have any one uncia examples ... Ummm, how 'bout a couple of Greek examples? (is that cheating?) ... above are two AE cast one uncia examples ... Congrats again on that great new AE RR addition
Wonderful posts!! This is not so early, no dolphins and it's an Ae AS but I think it's kinda cool and interesting (not to mention a cheap snack)---and it has PROWS I liked the three prows and the 'bobbing heads' seemingly in the water facing each other ahead of the ships...."I told you Marcus, we should have taken the ox-cart on dry land. To hades with the expense" Actually it's a Janus type and the 'bobbing heads' are apparently the caps of the dioscuri.
