I just got my State Tax Refund in, and was thinking of plunking down some cash for a nice Draped Bust Large Cent. I think the Draped Bust series is gorgeous.

Anyway, take a look at the attached pics. What I thought was a large dent or scratch appears by Ms. Liberty's face. In looking closer at the pic, it appears that she is stamped onto it. It also runs up into the R of "Liberty." Though in the SW quad, that appears to be a rim-ding rather than a cud.

Any suggestions? Even given the flaws, it's still a nice looking coin.

Would you buy it? I'm planning on going into the $250. range.

    Thanks for any input.

At first I thought it was clash marks, there are some on the reverse too. But I can't identify anything on either side that would match up to make such marks

If I didn't know better, I'd say it was an overstrike. But to the best of my knowledge the US didn't do any overstrikes

WOW. I see something that looks like the 8 in the date has a 7 under it. There is a clash mark? in front of her throat I have no idea what would of caused the large mark in front of her face though. Like Doug says there is no match up. I notice a clash mark on the reverse down by the 1/100 area too.

Very nice specimen. Thanks for sharing.

I would definately give it a shot.
Plus, consider sending it to Coin World, Collector's Clearinghouse, for them to check out.
Very interesting, that's why I like early stuff.

It looks like a planchet flaw, possibly pre-strike damage that wasn't erased by the strike. The fact that the crease passes beneath the R of LIBERTY without affecting the letter reinforces my opinion.

It looks like a pre-strike lamination fold-over. A bit what mikediamond said.
