A vendor my company does business with and I got to talking about coins being my latest fad when he said he collected coins, too. Well, I perked up. My first coin friend that understood me! When I threw around big words like PCGS & NGC he got the deer in the headlights look. Apparently, he's just been socking away anything that got in his way that he felt was collectable and (like I used to) had no idea how much more there was to learn about coin collecting. He has told me stories of "wonderful things" that he has just stashed and never looked back at. Today, he brought in a silver denarius with Tiberius on it. It was in a mylar flip and he said: "You can take it out if you want." What! Are you kidding me I'm not touching that thing! First one I've ever seen. What an exhilarating experience it was to hold this coin! Stories just oozed from this coin. The misery, the treason. I am of course, assuming it's real but I have no reason to doubt it. Once I regained my senses I told him he should send it in, if only to authenticate it and protect it. He could obviously care less about grade or value, but I think he would want to know if he's been carrying around a slug. But, it looked to me to be very nice. Should I keep urging him to do this, or just leave it as a suggestion. I shutter to think he has Morgan's in an old Crown Royal bag getting banged by a vacuum, or worse. Sorry 'bout the long story.
I would leave it as a suggestion. Perhaps suggesting that he pick up some reading materials on coin collecting/storage or even suggest that he join CT. He obviously likes coins raw but also seems more like a hoarder than a collector based on your description. TC
