With the US Mints decision to discontinue the set, what do you think will now happen to the going rates of the older sets? A look on ebay shows they are not selling for much more then the original issue price, and in some instances, much much lower.

Do you think the prices will stay below issue price, or with the completion of the set, do you think prices will rise?

Do you think the set is worth more when sold as a complete set - meaning with 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008 sets? or does it not matter?

I am running out of room in my safe, and was thinking of parting with my sets. I really like the presentation, and information - but the sets are 2 different sizes, and take up a heck of alot of room in the old safe lol

Wish I could give you a definative answere Dagg, but my crystal ball fell off the dinning room table and broke yesterday and Chewy (our new dog) ate the Ouija board. Time will only tell my friend. My gut feeling is that these particular issues will not appreciate too much in the future. Like you, I've got them all and yes they do take up a lot of space. I like the unique packaging and that was the reason I began collecting these sets. Whether they go up or down in value I'm hangin' on to mine.....:)

I personally think the Legacy sets were a despirate cry from the U.S. Mint to create a set that would prove more popular. The mint and proof sets were lagging in sales and popularity and the resale prices were proving that. It seems the Legacy sets are following the same destiny, only the other two have a much longer history, so they were the ones to survive. I personally collect mint sets, and will start collecting proof sets as funding permits. I hope they do not discontinue either of them, and I feel bad for anyone who had good intentions of collecting Legacy sets for many years to come.

Like I said 'tapper, I purchased the Legacy's for their unique packaging. No other motive....

My gut feeling is that they will drop in price. Ultimately, coin collectors are interested in coins; not packaging.

If the Mint created a set that contained a unique coin(s), then the packaged set would take off in value. Many would be destroyed to obtain graded coins...making the remaining "intact" sets that much more valuable. The "buzz" would be tremendous.

For instance, If the Mint kept Mint sets the same as they always have...uncirculated business strikes. They could then created a limited edition Legacy Set (or whatever they want to call it) with the Satin finish coins. Now that would be a set worth collecting (imo).

The mint has two sets with unique coins currently: satin finish mint sets and proof sets, and they still are not appreciating like one would expect. I'm buying extra of a few select years, in hopes some will do well in the future. I'm not spending my life savings on them, and I'm not getting my hopes too high. But if I do well, my speculation payed off I guess.

I do the same thing...I especially like the silver proof sets because that's the only source for the silver dimes and half dollars. The "problem" with these sets is that they're not "limited edition".

Can you imagine if they restricted the silver proof sets to 50,000 only? ...there would be a mad frenzy to buy them. As sets were cracked open for grading, the "uncracked" sets would skyrocket in price.

I know they would never do that...I was just using that as an example. I'm just saying that if they want to make these "packaged" sets worth collecting, they need to put something in them worth collecting...numismatically.

EDIT: I just checked...the component coins of the 2007 Legacy Set can be bought on eBay for $90-$100. The BIN prices for the Set start and $220 and go up from there. Personally, I wouldn't pay an extra $120+ for cardboard and plastic.

As with green18, i didnt buy the sets in the hopes of striking it rich in the future! I bought them for the presentation and the information provided. I also love commems :D

I would love to keep them, and just might, if i can firgure out a nice place to store them that is not in the safe. Never thought i would see the day i outgrew an almost 30 cubic foot safe!
