I couple of weeks ago I was looking through a tube of eagles when I found these two coins. I received them back from grading today.
I have seen struck through errors on most years of the ase. My lcs had a whole roll of them, that they got out of their monster box
now that looks cool. this is the first time I have known for this to happen. darn if it don't look like the foreign object was stuck to the die and struck thru one coin and remained embedded in the other coin.this is probably part of someones stone out of a ring or other jewelry piece. I found a quarter once in a mint set that had a perfect struck thru area in the shape of a big jewelery stone.
I think it's outstanding that they were encapsulated together. Did you request that, or did PCGS do it on their own initiative?
I had to request encapsulating them together. I initially thought that the foreign object was possibly part of a lid since they are very similar in color. Rascal, that is an interesting idea on it being a stone from jewelry. Do you have a picture of the quarter with the struck thru error?
You may be right about this being a piece of a lid , either way it is awesome that the foreign object remained embedded into the coin and was found to go with the other struck thru coin. It looks like it could possibly be a piece off a emerald stone. sorry I no longer own the struck thru coin I mentioned , it was sold on ebay a few years back. Congratulations on finding these awesome errors and thanks for letting us see them.
