According to the mints just released 2010 schedule, it looks like the 1st quarter will not be out until April! Correct me if I am wrong...

it sure does look like April is the time and the mint has 5 quarter design to push for the whole year

i check on this Federal Reserve web site that shows release dates for coins but the dates havent been filled in yet but its early - the web site does show the dollar coin release dates http://www.frbservices.org/operations/currency/new_coin_quarters.html

having the release dates still doesnt mean that you can get them. like this year with the territory quarters - the web site gave release dates but i could never get them.

with the 2010 later release date on the mint web site and coin production down. maybe the mint has a different plan in mind instead of the 10 week quarter production time line for the state quarters

    GREAT!

That means I'll hear the question "when is the first new quarter coming out?" for 4 months.

Something to look forward to. ;)

You mean you don't make most of your money on modern clad?? ;)

Back to the subject at hand. I don't know how many of the new quarters I'll collect, but I am curious to see the designs in hand. They have to look better than the drawings the mint releases.
April sounds about right. That gives them time to mint and stockpile enough to get them out to banks al at once.

I think it's because the currency backwash is still going on (the Federal Reserve is getting more coins back from the banks than the banks are ordering from them) and they want to wait a bit before releasing them to get rid of some of the backlog of the 2009 coinage they still haven't distributed. Just a guess.

BTW the first design will be Hot Springs National Park in Arkansas. Er yes Yellowstone was the first national park, but they're going by the first time the park (or other historical site) first was reserved as a park, and Hot Springs I believe was a state park before it became a national one. Also out in 2010 will be Yellowstone in Wyoming, Yosemite in California, Grand Canyon in Arizona, and Mt. Hood in Oregon.

Designs haven't been released yet (they might not have been finalized, another possible explanation for waiting until April). The obverse will be basically identical to the quarter design used since 1999 (there was a time they were considering putting Theodore Roosevelt on the obverse, since he was so instrumental in promoting the national park system, but they decided to stick with the Washington design).

These will be going until at least 2021 (5 a year; each state, plus DC and the 5 territories, gets one; that's 56 quarters, so there will only be one of these in 2021 probably). When the series ends, the Secretary of the Treasure has the option of extending the program by allowing each state, DC, and territory to have a second design... extending it by about another 11 years.

Oh another BTW... as a companion to these the mint will also be producing silver coins with these design, 3 inches in diameter and containing 5 oz. of silver... will be the largest coins the US ever produced!

Im not even gonna bother collecting these. Its getting monotonous now.

My mom echoed the same sentiment... she saved the state quarters for 10 years (she refused to mess with DC and the territories) and she doesn't want to do it again for another 11.

I'll reserve judgement until I actually see them... I get each year's proof set anyway so I'll get them incidentally anyway... but I can see the point. It does get a bit monotonous when you keep doing the same thing over and over. The state quarters were popular because the rotating design was something new and different... but now we've already seen 11 years of rotating designs, and 11 more isn't going to get too many people excited much. It's like when Hollywood assumes that because people loved an original idea for a movie... they'll love a sequel that uses the exact same idea.

Time will tell I guess. I love the idea of redesigning circualting coins periodically... but doing it constantly kind of ruins the effect as badly as never doing it at all.

Still, there may be some good designs out of this.

It's going to be even worse because unlike the state quarters the banks are NOT going to be able to specifically order boxes of the new quarter designs. Requests for quarters will be filled with whatever happens to be on hand, circulated first, the whatever older Uncirculated may be on hand and THEN the new designs.

The CACC proposed the use of T Roosevelt for the obverse but the Treasury never even considered it. It would have required passing new legislation to accomplish.

I see that you can already subscribe to them, Rolls, Bags, Proof Sets, SIlver Proof Sets.
But I don't find the big bullion Park coins though. I wish they would put those on subscription!
