Folks, I don't have much to offer . . . . but I _do_ have access to the new Hot Springs Quarter that was released a few hours ago (I picked up a bunch and just got back). And so . . . the theme of this contest is "Americana and Coins". There are five questions. *Every* person that gets all five correct will get an uncirculated Hot Springs Quarter set (P & D). If nobody gets all five, then everybody who gets four correct will receive the prize. Answers by 12 noon Eastern Time tomorrow. Please PM me with your answers. 1. In what year did the District of Columbia elect their first mayor? 2. What US coin, mintage over one million, was hoarded by a single person who was able to hoard over 1/3 of the specimens ever made? Who was the hoarder? (Edit: to clarify, I am looking for a specific year/mintmark/coin) 3. What circulating coin depicts a person on its obverse, and the person's full surname on the reverse? 4. What circulating coin depicts a person (other than Lincoln) on its obverse and the same person is depicted on the reverse? (Edit: there are actually two answers to this) 5, Name a common American ancestor of Sarah Palin and Franklin Delano Roosevelt?

Answers and Winners to America the Beautiful Quarter Contest 1. In what year did the District of Columbia elect their first mayor? The answer I was looking for was 1974 (although the mayor didn't take office until 1975). I also accepted 1820 as an answer, although that really wasn't the present day Wash, D.C. 2. What US coin, mintage over one million, was hoarded by a single person who was able to hoard over 1/3 of the specimens ever made? Who was the hoarder? (Edit: to clarify, I am looking for a specific year/mintmark/coin) Quoting from some website: "Probably the most famous hoard coin of all time would be the 1950-D Jefferson nickel. We frankly do not know what percentage of its 2,630,030 mintage was hoarded initially, but somewhere on the order of 50 percent or more would be in the ballpark. A.J. Mitula of Houston, Texas, reportedly had 1 million pieces while another 320,000 were reported in Wisconsin and there were others with larger numbers involved." 3. What circulating coin depicts a person on its obverse, and the person's full surname on the reverse? The Washington State quarter. 4. What circulating coin depicts a person (other than Lincoln) on its obverse and the same person is depicted on the reverse? (Edit: there are actually two answers to this) The two answers are: South Dakota state quarter (Washington appears in Mt Rushmore) and the New Jersey state quarter (Washington crossing the Delaware) 5, Name a common American ancestor of Sarah Palin and Franklin Delano Roosevelt? I was looking for Richard Warren, who was one of the passengers on the Mayflower (and an ancestor of my wife). But many people gave a different answer: Rev John Lorthrop -- which is something I learned from the contestants. The winners are: swish513 (who doesn't collect these quarters and so is giving them to the son of another CT member) conpewter wiggam007 Opus007 Specksynder Louie_Two_Bits antics05 I think that's everybody. And honorable mention to: krispy jerseycat10 churndog OK -- winners, if you haven't already, send an email to me (at sholom@aishdas.org) with your postal address. A number of other folks have written me about getting these quarters anyway. If you're interested, also email me, and we'll work out something. I'll try to do the same thing when the next quarter comes out. But, obviously, I'll have to make the questions harder!
