I heard in the 1970s or 80s they made Aluminum or Tin pennies (I can’t remember)... does anybody know if they really exist? If so can you post pictures here?
Hey, there's this really cool website they invented a few years before you were born. They call it "Google." Check out what I was able to find in approximately 0.52 seconds using this innovative technology: https://coinweek.com/dealers-companies/blanchard/1973-74-aluminum-lincoln-penny/
No there just examples from ebay and the 1974 cent that you show is just platted the reason why it's $20 is it's a souvenir coin=fake replica
If you read the link I posted, you'd know that it was estimated at $2 million, but the mint "requested" it be returned and the owner sent it to the mint. The ones that Potty shows are not actually aluminum cents. They are cents struck on aluminum planchets intended for coins of other countries (the US mint used to strike coins for other countries, but does not do so anymore). Yes. Definitely fake.
Oh dear heavens no.... I could be wrong but I am thinking the only existing genuine cent struck on an aluminum planchet is housed in the Smithsonian Museum. That’s not a coin that us normal folks will ever own.
This question is the reason I feel like the numismatic community needs to go to war with these people passing off garbage as rare and valuable specimens. Coin collecting should be a fun hobby that is not scary and daunting to a young collector excited about coins. It is unconscionable..... Stick with us and we will steer you clear of the garbage out there.
On a related topic - when I was in India, I noticed that they spell Aluminum as Aluminium, with that extra "i" after the "n". British influence I suppose.
