This is the place to make the transition from concentrating on the detail, to looking first at the whole picture and then contemplating where that detail fits in.

In this case: Your first thought, upon seeing a coin which has an odd feature like this, is "What is possible?" That's always the first question, and should be habitual. You've seen enough of these things now to begin drawing broader conclusions about the class of feature you're looking at, and it's based on that near-subconscious initial thought of what's possible for stuff in that class.

You look at this coin, and see something you recognize as looking like a clash. You already know the Memorial can create that look when clashed. But, the coin doesn't pass two fundamental laws of clashing: The features are too big for what they could be, and they show up on some of the "deeper" parts of the obverse die, which are the farthest places from a possible clash. Therefore, you immediately rule out clashing, and proceed down the chain of possibilities.

I'm not saying you should automatically be thinking that way right now, just that you now know enough to start training yourself to think with that broader skepticism.
