Forget about the grade, it's worth silver content value only, what is going on with that coin? I've never seen a black Franklin half.

I disagree. I think it's probably mint-state. It looks to me like it has end-of-roll toning or, less likely, toning from an original mint set where the paper was folded over.

The stuff on the back looks like adhesive or similar. Possibly a acetone rinse would remove it. True, a 62P is probably only worth the melt multiplier. The toning is very common for silver in some environment if worn down first and then allowed to sit and tone for a decade or so. You tend to get a dark monochrome color since the surface is flat.

  6. when my mother gave them to me, they were in a bag with a bunch of other coins. the coins were being saved for her grandkids (which ain't happening soon since i'm an only child and still single) and neither her nor my father knew anything about storage, value or anything. in that bag were coins that were corroded beyond recognition. and who knows how long they'd all been together just rattlin' around together.

Looks like a candidate for a dip experiment . The shape of the toning is sorta how the plastic on my '51 Proof set looked , so it could be from a mint set or envelope .

Yeah, I forgot adhesive. It could be from tape or something.

That being said, the pattern really does look just like an end-roll or Mint set coin.

I forgot to mention that if you're not certain, I wouldn't try cleaning it. Have a professional or three look at it first.
