Missing only the 1870 CC. Any comments or value estimates?

I'd be real concerned about that folder you got them in. I'd bet money that thing is PVC.

I was about to reply with the same thing.

As for value, it's hard to determine such a thing unless you gave us possible grades of each individual coin, etc. Some collectors will go for a complete set while others seek out better specimens and key date coins, not bothering with common years, etc.

Looks like a nice pile of Chinese fakes.

That was my first thought. Have you checked the coins with a magnet?

    CON**SCAM**FRAUD**ALL CHINESE FAKES**!!
Several months ago two men entered my shop with the above so called coins. In addition, they also had the half dollar complete set. They claimed to be brothers who had inherited these from….(drum roll)..their grandfather. Of course, they had no idea of their value. They also had two sets of sterling silver flatware, which was clearly marked sterling. So, I asked if they would take $4K for the dollar set and the other silver which was melt price at that time. Well, they said, had hoped the set was worth more but 4K cash would do it. After I had the younger fortyish man fill out the information sheet and as he thought I was going to get the cash I instead called him down on the Chinese stuff. I also informed him that I was a former investigator and I would call my former partner who now is a Secret Service department head. This caused the younger one to bolt and the older one to sing like a canary. After the older ones information and all the checks on tags it turned out that they were actually father and son. The father admitted it all came from Craigs list and that his son was a convicted felon. The father said he was never going to do this again as he too fled leaving behind the Fake Chinese Dollars and flatware. The flatware was as bogus as the coins.
This was the first complete set of fakes I had ever seen. The 1870 CC was included as well, but I took it out not to look too obvious with the post. However, you guys are too smart to fool, but maybe it will serve to some that these things are all over the place and in full sets, so be careful.
As and ending note they do not attract a magnet. They weigh what they are supposed to. The “fisch” silver dollar detector people do not have one for these years, but if using one for what ever reason they pass those tests including the diameter.
However, in hand they don’t look right and the simple fingertip “ping test” will get you a dull noise every time.

Good post sir. Thanks. The giveaway for me was the packaging. I would have taken more than 2 seconds to guess if they had been in good Danscos. I have bought a lot of coins from China and immediately recognized the type of packaging they use. Just for clarity, the coins I bought from China were authentic cash coins from a good seller. :) I am not sure such a thing exists nowadays, but it did 10 years ago.

Ouch...pvc, chinese fakes, not key dates, magnets. Tough, but true crowd out today. I intend to agree, that folder looks suspect as it looks like the older albums with PVC material. Did you assemble this set yourself or did you purchase the lot as is? Take it from us, we're here to help you protect your investment, we're not trying to be hard on ya.

Whoops, my previous post came up right when your long story lesson did. Too little too late! But it doesn't amaze me the amount of fake merchandise floating out there. Thanks for the back story.

Ya, no one in the right mind would put (if they were real) those EXPENSIVE coins in a crappy plastic PVC ridden book.

The first complete set I saw was three or four years ago. Beth Deisher (editor of Coin World) and Dr. Gregory Dubay gave an EXCELLENT mini-seminar entitled 'The Chinese Counterfeit Threat' (or something similar). Dr. Dubay had visited some of the counterfeiters in China and brought back lots and lots of counterfeit coins, several of the dies used to strike the coins and some of the complete sets (like the one shown in the OP). I can't recall everything he had but I think he had complete sets of Seated Liberty Dollars, Trade Dollars, Morgan and Peace Dollars, Barber Halves, and Large Cents. That was a real eye-opener.

I wonder if there's a video of that seminar. That would be an interesting watch.

No no no, you should not be surprised at the ignorance in our world. People have done worse or dumber things. They do walk amongst us.

No. This was a mini-seminar at Summer Seminar. It was not recorded. But Dr. Dubay gave similar seminars at a couple of ANA shows. Those could have been recorded but I don't know. Contact ANA; they should be able to tell you if it was recorded.

In regards to Dr. Dubay that guy is amazing in his knowledge. Aside from his other teachings at shows he also advises the Secret Service. Just a week ago he showed me some 20+ Oregon Trail Commeratives. He commented that they were some of the best he has ever seen. Thats pretty scary.

That is awesome man. Love the coins that I have seen. What about getting them in a Dansco?

You miss the part where they're fake?

Glad to hear nobody got taken by those fake coins. I wouldn't be able to tell by looking at the pictures except it was too disorganized for a collection and like others have stated. The cheap album it was stored in, and the fact that the father was involved only shows what kind of person he is.
